    Hi all,

Sorry for the longwinded post..but I've had it with this PC...

Windows XP Home Edition. Pre installed on HP Pavilion a1140a.

Yesterday I decided I would use the instructions I had to bypass the Windows Log On Screen as I was sick of clicking OK everytime time the computer started up.

I went into Start-Run and typed "control userpasswords2" and the User Accounts window displayed. In the users tab I unchecked "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and clicked "apply". It then asked me to enter a user name and password, as I dont have one for the computer I clicked OK.

I then closed everything off and restarted the computer, it got as far as the Log On to Windows window and I got another message saying it couldn't log me on please contact administrator or similar, I cant quite remember, anyway I restarted in safe mode and rechecked "Users must enter...." I restarted again and I still couldn't get in, I then went back into safe mode and I cant quite remember what I did but I got to a point where I can now get into the computer.

Now on start up, when the Log on to Windows window appears, I get a Log on Message window with:

-The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type in your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.

If I click OK in the Log on Message window the password dots dissappear from the password field in the Log on to Windows window and if I then click OK in the Log on to Windows window the computer will then start up OK.

If I go to Start-Control Panels-User Accounts-Change the way users log on or off...the Select Logon and Logoff Options are greyed out and I get a User Accounts window come up with the message:

    - A recently insalled program has disabled the welcome screen and fast user switching. To resore these features, you must uninstall the program. The following file name might help you indentify the progam that made the change: MrvGINA.dll

(if this is a virus or something Vundofix and CA Virus is not picking it up.) Also I tried putting the .dll in the trash, but the computer wouldn't display the Log on to Windows window. I had to go into safe mode and restore it..

I have never been into user accounts before so dont know how long the Select Logon and Logoff Options have been greyed out.

Is there a way I can delete any passwords, bypass the Log on to Windows window, stop the Log on message appearing and ungrey the Select Logon and Logoff Options as I would like to use the Welcome screen???

If its not possible to activate the Welcome screen, is there a way to bypass everything so when the computer starts up it will go straight to the desktop??

    Freezing Issues.

This has always been a problem with this PC for some reason.

The computer freezes in moments of inactivity or in the middle of doing something, can be in anything..its bloody frustrating...

I uninstalled Nortons 2005, complete uninstall, not just via Add or Remove programes, as I was told this could be what the problem is.

It was fine yesterday and didn't freeze once, today it froze twice, I'm now at a loss as to what is causing it, can anybody help please????

    Cheers Rosscoe

MrvGina.dll is a Graphical Identification and Authentication Dynamic Link

Library* that Netgear seems to want to install as part of its wireless card

    drivers.

Put the default msgina.dll back by running this util.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the link, will give it a try and let you know how I go.

If the .dll needs changing as the link suggests will it affect the Netgear Wireless settings at all?

I don't believe it will, but I am not 100% for sure. You may just have to put the parameters back in so write them down first just in case

In safe mode (is the current suggestion doesn't work) i would try to make another Admin user (I'm having trouble understanding your problem a bit) with a password of some kind. Also, being on an HP, if all else fails you can make a backup of all your personal data: setups, photo's, vids, and other docs. and i would try the system restore partition from the BIOS, if my memory serves me correctly it should be F2. I would use this as a last resort.

    Hi Sunkworks,

I downloaded and ran the programme, yes, the .dll was not correct so I fixed it, but when I restarted it would not get past the "Windows is starting up" page.

I then restarted in Safe Mode, it started up fine with the "Welcome to Windows" page and all the "Login as user... options" so I'm not sure what is wrong if I start up in Normal Mode.

I created a Restore Point before I changed the .dll so I went back to that in Safe Mode and I was able to get back to the start up procedure where I was before.

I have a technician coming over shortly to fix the freezing problem, he said he may have to re install Windows because of the Partitioned HP drive that is probably causing the freezing problem. So I guess my startup problem will be cured one way or the other.

    Will post up what happens.

    Thanks Rosscoe

If you can get into safe mode I would try uninstalling the NetGear then reboot, see what happens, you can always reinstall it later
