All of a sudden, I cannot get windows XP Pro past the title screen where the lgreen loading bar is moving back and forth. I tried last good config...nothing. Safe mode...Nada.
Nothing. It will not load all the drivers in safe mode, and will not progress beyond the title screen in regular mode. This has never happened to me before. I have not touched the boot sector, and run Mcafee, 2 spyware cleanersand system mechanic.
Can anyone please shed some light on why this is occurring?
A thousand thanks! and a happy Valentines day to all!

    Best,
    Bill

what was the last thing u did on the computer before this happened?
    downloaded something
did a virus scan or something??

It could be a hardware problem as well

Yeah there are a million things it could be. For instance, my computer crashed last night, same thing as yours, after I had to do a hard reboot, but I have had this over loads of different hardware and software problems. Fixed it this time by starting in safe mode which I see you cant do.

Do you have a WindowsXP CD?

Presumably you have other internet access to post your query.

Since you can get Windows to start, your Master Boot Record and Sector are intact and boot.ini finds the correct OS. You were right not to touch the boot sector stuff.

Try again the advanced options screen but instead of going for safe mode choose 'enable boot logging'.
Then do it again choosing 'command prompt'. If you can get to the prompt, copy the file NTBTLOG.TXT to a floppy. This should be in the root of the c:\windows
    folder.
Post this file on MG. It the last entries should show where the system is hanging.
If you can't get to the command prompt using F8, then boot the pc into the repair console using the XP CD and copy it that way.

Alternatively you could perform a repair install from the CD. You will not loose data if you do this but some programs particularly need re-installation afterwards.

Oh the irony, I had the same error hit me today. If your problem gets worse and ends with a DOS prompt asking for the OS disk then you perhaps need this solution http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=117501

The point is rather that it depends on what the error is whether the MBR is affected or not. In my case, I had exactly the same initial symptons, and I know a lot of things can lead to this. And then it very clearly turned into a MBR problem. It is possible for instance that the act of running Mcafee has damaged the MBR in Bill E's case and this could account for the hanging. Well thought I would throw it out there as an idea.
