Chkdsk keeps on running every time I start the laptop and stays at stage 3 of 5 forever and does not seem to move forward after 12 hours. The only way that I have to restart the computer is if I take the battery out. I can skip the process by pressing any key before stage 1 runs. The first time it happened after an update from Microsoft Windows. When I can finally get into my computer, I can work for a while and sometimes it freezes by itself. At the beginning I thought it was the registry being corrupted or something and I installed RegCure to solve the problem, but it keeps on doing the same thing and it does not seem to solve all the problems because if I start a new scan of it, it reads more errors. I am not sure what to do or where to move from here. Any ideas? I am attaching a jpeg of the chkdsk stopped at stage 3. Thanks in advanced

You might have a hard drive problem....Find out the manufacturer of your hard drive and download and run their tool to scan your drive for errors.

the problem i am facing is that the disk check tool will not run because it forcely want to run the floppy disk option and it is not compatible with a disc drive. Of course, I do not have a floppy drive. Any other suggestions?

Did this start to happen after the Windows update, including SP2 or SP3... if so... reboot and skip the Chk... then uninstall updates and reboot...see if it continues...

Only say this as it append to a system I looked at and it cured that one... later I did the updates one at a time and they went in fine.

Just a quick PS:... there are a lot of shut down problems with systems about that have downloaded SP3.... if you go to the system Manafacturer site they have patches to install for prior instellation of SP3.

so, this means that I should not trust in Microsoft every time that an automatic update will be done? Now, should I still try to install these patches even after the problem has occurred? Thanks so much for the information.

There are a few of us that are cynical enough not to trust anyone with an update…. lol… but, it does come to a stage that you have to do some, if only to get the best out of drivers software and hardware. If you want your office package to read the latest attachment from someone with the latest innovative packages, then yes you are going to need to do them.

Service Packs… SP1 SP2 SP3… these are an accumulation over time of all the, glitches, pain in the back side freezes, gremlin in the system and just plain faults, that people have sent in the auto… Send a report screen you get when you hit a problem to Microsoft….

All the glitches and gremlins are then check by Microsoft… and all the latest little hack vulnerabilities that have been discovered… are patched by way of update.

If you ever did a fresh install of XP with a disk that included SP1… when finished you’d get on line and spend another 2-3 hrs just downloading the latest updates…. Then you’d wait for them to install.

But like all mass installs... Some need to be done in a particular order for them to take correctly… hence sometimes you have to do a restart for them to take and continue the next lot.

As best can be made the latest SP3 has taken all and placed them in an order of a semblance and sequence.

Main problem…. No matter who you are you cant provide for ever spec known to the computer world in one go. That’s how Microsoft track software… and use the general public to test drive the software and beta products… best advice at the moment is let SP3 be for the moment… You can choose not to download it in updates and wait till it has been made the best that it can be… there is an option as well in the updates to review if you need it or it will be of benefit to you.
Also check system manufacture or forums about your system to get the best advice on updates and installs for your system.

Can I take it that you have managed to sort it?

    Stephen.
