    I bought a used laptop and would like to restore it to original settings it is a dell windows xp. It is locked with an administrative password. How do I do this??

    Hi and welcome to MG's,
    Can you get into any account on the machine ?? if you can then follow the instructions here..... http://wiki.ljackson.us/Control_Userpasswords2 ..

    if you cannot, you can use this tool to remove all of windows passwords.....

    create a bootable disc by following the instructions and use it to boot the machine as you would with an OS disc.

    I recently had a similar problem with a netbook that a friend of mine came to me about. They could not log in because they had no idea of the admin pw and didn't have any disc with the computer.

    I found an article that walked me through the process of resetting the admin pw. It worked perfectly.

    note: the article is for win7 but I don't see why it wouldn't work for XP.
