Help!!!!!

i have a compaq s4020wm.i was working on it and it locked up.dead.so now all it is doing when i start it is the fans come on and the cd drive can open.nothing on the screen,no beeps,does not sound like the hard drive is firing up????i tried different power supply and hard drive and same thing?is the cpu bad maybe???? thanks

 

You said you were working on your compaq, details on what ya did?
It wasnt powered up when you were working on it, was it?

Usually you do get beeps to diagnos problems, do you have onboard speaker?
I've had a couple of pc's that would not provide beep code, all fans,drives would power up, no video, both pc's, the problem was grounded mobo.
Check all connections, IDE, power connections, front pannel etc.
Also check the onboard speaker if ya have such.
Do you have video card or onboard video?

Do you have bad cpu, dont know.
Even if you had bad HDD your pc can still post & enter bios.
Power supply, you tryed another did it have equal or better spec's?

 

i put a 2500 barton in that i had floatin around it it now works.although it only reads it as a xp1900. anyone know how to get deeper into this crappy compaq bios to make it read the cpu correctly?

 

Dont know your mobo but a bios update might help.

 

if you were tweakin your bios, sounds like you need to reset your cmos, if you need to know how ..reply

 

For Xp2500 cpu, Assuming your mobo supports that cpu, In bios "Advanced Chipset Features" set CPU Multiplier to 11x & Cpu External Freq.(MHZ) or CPU fsb to 166

An Xp2500+ Barton CPU runs at 1833 MHZ
