Hi there, I'm new here, and I had a problem with my computer and I figured I'd ask for help.

The problem started when I went out for a night of partying with some friends. I come home the next day, and figure I might play some World of Warcraft. After trying to log on, it says Unable to connect to server. I blink and close it. I also figure out in a few minutes that I can also not log on to AOL Instant Messenger, and some sites that require me to log in. Keep in mind, the Internet is still working.

So I go to my stepdad and ask him if he did anything to my machine while I was away. He says "I ran Windows Update, I thought it would help."

    I proceeded to clothsline him.

After the Windows Update fiasco, I tried to run Windows Update again, getting the dreaded 0x800C0005 error.

So after doing several things, including running virus scans, ad-aware, etc, I am at a complete loss. I'm running Windows 98 with NO firewall. Is there anyone out there that can help? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Didn't know if this was the place to ask for help, if it wasn't, sorry =(

See if any of the steps below help, it's at least a starting point. You need to get a firewall, get these issues fixed and then we can give you some good free firewalls that are easy to setup.

    1. Start Internet Explorer, and then click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. Verify that the Cipher Strength value is 128-bit.

    2. Clear Internet Cache
    Click Tools > Internet Options
In the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Cookies"
Click "Delete Files" click "Delete all offline content" click OK
In the "History" section, click "Clear History".
    Click "OK".

    3. Repair Internet Explorer
Start > Settings > Control Panel
    Double click Add/Remove Programs
    Double click "Microsoft Internet Explorer..."
    Select "Repair Internet explorer"
    Click OK and follow prompts.
    Reboot.

    4. Register the following system files
    Click Start > Run
    Type regsvr32 softpub.dll
    Press OK
Repeat the above steps for the following:

    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

    Let us know.

    1. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Advanced tab.

    2. Under Security, select the Use SSL2.0 check box and the Use SSL3.0 check box (if they are not already selected).

    3. Click OK.
