    Hi

Could you tell us the exact Dell model PC you have? as that will link to the drivers needed?

The main aspect is install the chipset first and reboot, then install the UAA HD Audio driver HERE (as you have XP Sp2 only, you need this driver for audio to work) then reboot and install the Dell listed Audio driver for your PC model and reboot and test sound,

Have you updated to SP3 since your original post? as that file is for SP2 which your DXDiag log says you have, unless you have a weird version of Windows!

    But try this

Install the Chipset HERE and reboot

If you have now SP3 then ignore the following but it not try this UAA HD driver HERE and reboot.

Then install the audio driver from HERE (for some unknown reason DELLs website is throwing out errors on downloads today) and reboot and test sound,

Hi, did you install the chipset driver first ???.

Sadly part of the problem in doing so as you likely didn't have the core drivers already installed as in chipset etc so can you tell us what devices in Device Manager have yellow ! marks by them?

To install the UAA HD driver post SP3 you can run the below, but it does really need a retail or OEM version of Windows as a less than kosher one (not surmising) will likely fail.

    Hi,
Would it be possible for you to start from 'scratch' again, format and re-install the OS ??? I know it can be a pain in the preverbial 'BUT' it will be the quickest and easiest way round for a fix to your issue, If this is an option that you are willing to do, then follow the instructions that DavidGP (forum ninja) gave in post #6, making sure that you install the drivers in this order..

1.) Chipset Driver. (in post #6)

2.) UAA Driver. (in post #6)

    3.)Audio Driver. (in post #6)

4.) Once you have sound then update your OS to SP3.

ok tried to reinstall got this error flile acpi.sys unexpected error (1024) at line 5897
    d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

You do not need to buy the drivers, you just need to install them in the correct way, thus why I asked if a reformat and fresh install of the OS was an option.

    iain.t MajorGeek

13 drivers ??? :confused I only asked for you to install 3 drivers ....

    1. Chipset
    2. UAA
    3. Audio

Do NOT install SP3 yet as we need to get the sound working first.

Right did you follow the exact instructions that i gave you ? in the order as above ? it is very important that you did otherwise it would not remedy the issue.

That's a good sign ;).... now I am wondering if SP3 will fix the hda error, if the fix has failed again upgrade your system to SP3, we can work on it from there onwards now that everything as it should be in the device manager.
