    my pc crashed got a black screen tryed to reboot nothing happened tryed me start-up disk scandisk/all,scanreg/restore and nothing is working.tryed reboot in safe mode and it freezes tryed scanning for virus with agv 7 and no viruses i keep getting error message please wait while setup updates your configuration files this may take a few moments and nothing happens i have checked dir/p in dos and all files are still there please help

    thanks Tim i found a file in windows directory in dos mode size of file is 209,715,200 file is win386.swp what is this

    Thank Tim i figured out how to delete in dos but still cannot get my pc to boot up in safemode im at wits end

    hi Tim i did the scanreg/restore and it still stops at the screen please wait while setup updates your configuration files this may take a few moments and it freezes there is there another way of doing a restore

    just have patience .....I usually get to the 13 minutes left point and it can stay like that for an hour ...it depends on your system....so just go do something and come back later ...

    At this point, I know of a few other things that might help, but, they are quite complicated.

    Right now (I hate to admit), try a repair install of ME, on top of the windows install. From reading above, you tried this? Or did you not try this?

    Where does it freeze? Does it freeze when windows is starting? Does it freeze when the desktop doesn't appear?

    It could be a shell issue.

    To "fix" this, try editing the system.ini file, and removing explorer.exe within the "shell=" portion to read: "shell=command.com".

    Note: This isn't really a fix, just a point that we can run certain commands to help out.

    Note, only do this if the above issues are causing your issue.

    Thanks THEEFOOL i have the originl install disk and tryed a recovery from it but did not work any kind of help would be greatly appecated thanks PETER

    I have tried editing system.ini...the file did not come up?
