You get a better connection, or you get closer to the server your playing on. simple enough.

keyboard issue? err anyways when you get a server list the little tab that says PING click it; it will now sort it from highest ping to lowest; just choose a low valued ping (50 n below is low) and play in those servers only.

Its not actually the ping thats the problem here, because his friend on the same server gets simelar pings but with the "lagging" problem. Although it looks like lag, its actually the keyboard not registering that hes taken his finger off the button so he keeps going forwards and the controls freeze momentarily. All the other players in the game move normally, so I'm thinking its not a traditional lag issue.

that can be relative to his RATE in the command console; if you have broadband it shouuld be set to 9999 or 10001. if he has a low rate (IE 4000) he will "lag"

What type of video card do you have? A New video card like the 9800 pro or 5900ultra, along with a dsl or cable connection, should not lag really, unless you play big games like 25/25 people or soemthing like that. I like to reset my modem every once in a while as well. Also, play on the servers with the best ping(im sure you already know this).

lol a 9800/5900 will NOT lag on a game from 1997 with 25 ppl in it....

games from 1997 are not big games. UT2K4 is a big game. Aside from that, what percentage of people are playing games from 1997... probably not many. Please comprehend before posting. Most of your posts are awfully misleading and filled with misinformation and will most likely be moderated. Your attitude of "eliteness" is becoming tiresome. Tred lightly, I have an itchy ban button finger.

You're lag problems are most likely not due to ping but unnecessary processes on you machine. Take a look at your start up and get rid of anything you don’t need (IE Real Media, AIM QuickTime) and see if that helps.

There are some commands you can play with in the console that have a pretty decent affect on your ping. Depending on your internet connection (DSL), the value of the commands you enter should be set higher or lower. I'll explain these commands in the next few paragraphs. I wanted to confirm what the others have said. Play on a server that is close to you geographically speaking. If you live in KY, see if you can find a server that's in IN or TN.

Another thing to check is to make sure that on the server list screen where you choose what server to connect to, look up in the top right-hand corner and make sure your connection is set on DSL. Depending on your down/up stream, you may want to put it on T1 or something. Yet another thing to help out your ping... defragment your hard drive, believe it or not. I've also heard that turning off the indexing service can help, although I don't see or understand how that could help.

The commands I mentioned earlier... there are four main ones. They are as follows:
    • cl_cmdrate
    • cl_updaterate
    • cl_latency
    • rate
If you do a google search for "Half-Life Console Commands" you'll come up with an explaination of each of these commands. I would gladly give you the explaination, but I'm afraid my limit on characters for the post is going to run out. These commands can help you fine tune your connection to make it run smoother without so much lag. Hope it helps!

    P.S.

I neglected to mention that what Goldie said may very well be the problem. It may actually be the server lagging... not you. Test this theory out by trying different servers and see if you lag in them all. Also, if you're using Steam (which most everyone is now) make sure Steam's not automatically downloading updates for other games while you're in a game. You talk about lag!

Also make sure you don't have any other bandwidth eating programs, which I'm sure that's common sense, but just to make sure. I would say that if you have Steam, you probably have several of your mods set to update automatically, which I would suggest immediately changing to "never update this game automatically". This will save you so much aggrevation while playing.

Great choice in mods. TFC has been my favorite for about 3 years ever since I was introduced to it. Always good to run into a fellow TFC'er. By the way... if you ever run into T-Rex out there... ya better watch out! ;)
