I am new to this forum as a member, but I have used it in the past. It was referred to me by a fellow member on another forum. He is a geek, I am not. I am still learning.
But after browsing around a bit this am, I believe I have not used it enough. I plan on doing so in the future.
I do have a question. My daughter wants to make a back up copy of a cd she has for a class. How do I go about it? I have looked at your list under backups and not sure how to proceed.
And the operating word here is free.:-D
There is some great stuff on here

You won't find anything better for this task than Alcohol 52, free for private use and just incredibly useful. Once you have it installed you will hardly ever use your optical drive again!

    Hi,

You also could use Infrarecorder to do the job, is really easy to use and available in XP/Vista/7.

There's an option to select "Copy Disc" that makes an exact copy of the CD or DVD you can place it on the desktop, my documents or where you want, and you could burn it in a new disc later clicking in "Write Image".

The "image" is an ISO file "just one file for whole DVD or CD".

If you want to read the image and have a virtual DVD drive that reads all you ISO files you could install Daemon Tools Lite

I talk about two programs because i don't know if you just want to backup it or backup it and read it from computer, so you could be specific for the job with a program or select something with both options like Alcohol mentioned below by Earthlink.

The difference is Infrarecorder have GNU/GPL license and Daemon a free version, alcohol is Shareware.

    Best Regards.

Thank you all so much for your helpful and quick replies.
Umm, except in the future, when you see my user name, keep it very simple and in layman's terms. I have no clue what an optical drive is. :-o
I am sure we will figure out the best thing to use.
    Again, thanks.
Oh, and this forum is set up exactly like the sports forum I am on. I will be able to find my way around easy.

I downloaded Infrarecorder and clicked on Copy disk. A popup says must be cloned. Click ok and another popup but ok is shaded out. What next? I need to copy it and then make another copy on disc.
