    Hi,

Bluelou here from Seguin Tx. That's just east of San Antonio (GO SPURS GO!).
I have been on before and got some great help, now I have a need for help again.
I ended up getting a browser redirect virus the other day. It disabled spybot and won't let me go to spybot website. I ran my norton fullscan and it locked up my system.
System is XP 2.0Ghz pentium, 2G ram abit vt7motherboard.
When I rebooted the desktop came up but no programs would run. After several reboots the system came up with the disabled active desktop (progress?). I could then click on an icon and after several minutes it may open but won't run, locks up.
Now the last reboot I did went back to my regular desktop picture with no icons. I can run programs from the start button and they seem to run correctly.
I tried to put some files, pics etc...on dvd using nero but it gave me errors. Now nero won't recognize discs.

    OK, what should I do?

    Thanks

    Greetings, bluelou.

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Either in Normal Mode or in Safe Mode, I strongly suggest you go through the Malware Forum's Read & Run Me First thread, perform all of the suggested steps, and attach the requested logs to a new thread in that forum.

If and when the Malware gurus give you the all clear we can take further steps to get your machine running smoothly again.

Hey, thanks for responding. No it won't boot to safe mode. I intend to try the steps in the malware read me first when I get back on that machine but I don't know if it will let me. It acts differently with each reboot.

The inability to boot into Safe Mode is not good.

Do you have a valid XP disk? If so, you might try running a System File Check.

Yeah, I've been looking for it but can't find. Moved a couple of times since it was installed.

Do try to find it, because running the SFC without a reference is pretty much useless.

In lieu of that, do you have access to a machine that can burn disks? If so, you might try downloading the XP Recovery Console .iso, burning that file to disk as an image, and possibly repairing your OS.

OK. I burned that to disc. Please excuse my ignorance but how do I use that? What opens .iso files? Is there anything I should do before this?
    Will I lose data?

Without knowing what is wrong, it is useless to have you boot into the recovery console. I suggest that you try to follow the steps of the Read and Run First instructions. Then start a thread in the malware forum and attach the logs you can get.
