Hi-Trouble with laptop

    It will boot in safe mode, but not in normal mode. The only indication of problem is that the sound icon is X-ed out. When I click on it, it tries to find a problem, but only says "Hardware changes might not have been detected."

    I tried a system restore to factory settings--still the x-out.
    When in device manager, it says The device cannot start. (code 10)

    Please help.

    Hi and Welcome

    What I would normally try first is to re-install the Chipset drivers HERE and reboot then install as you seem to be having sound issues the Audio drivers from HERE and reboot and try out your PC.

    If you can only get into safe mode still then the next logical steps are you have a major hardware failure in the hard drive, or you have malware and for malware follow this below
