    Hi,

I have a desktop machine that I built myself, Asus A7N8X-deluxe etc. Working fine for 2 years. I would like to use sleep/hibernate mode ie I want to push the sleep button on my keyboard and have everything standby (suspend to RAM I believe) then 20 mins later, push a button and find that within 30 secs everything is back on my desktop as it was before I pushed the button. (IE not go through the whole logon rigmarol, choose user etc just after short breaks ie lunch)

I thought that I had set my bios appropriately, ACPI suspend to RAM enabled, awake from USB device enabled (I have a USB microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard), tried all the video off options DPMS/Blank screen etc but no joy. The PC will turn off when I push sleep, but not come back on again.

I have tried searching the web and realised that I might need to enable hibernate in windows. When I click enable hibernate, apply, I get told that The power policy manager is unable to reserve the hibernate file. After checking some websites I decided to try and find the hibersys.dll (I think that was it) file to delete it but this does not exist on my PC (including searching hidden folders and system folders).

Can anyone help me? I know that there are different levels of sleep mode which turn off different components S1-4 etc. I would like the deepest sleep that returns me to my previous desktop, although any kind of sleep would be a good start.

Athlon XP 2400+, very mediocre 64MB graphics card, 1 GB RAM, 2x 80GB IDE hard drives and 1 x SATA 300GB HD (System on IDE drive).

    Anyone have any ideas??

    thanks in advance

You can all ignore my last post.. after fiddling on and off with sleep for weeks, I posted for help last night, then half an hour later it all became clear..

Hibernate is totally different from what I wanted to do, I needed sleep mode (not to turn of in the middle of several tasks then switch on several days later and have the workspace restored exactly how it was before, which is what hibernate is I think)

You have to briefly push the button on front of the pc to wake up from sleep!!!! Duh!! my USB keyboard can't do it, only a PS2 keyboard. Everything works fine now.. it's amazing how the simplest things can block you for ages! My pc puts my hard drives to sleep, keeps the chip fan running I think, but the pc goes quiet as a mouse (I installed a Zalman flower cooler, and silent (almost) PSU (Elan Vital with super silent mode... very very good, fan almost never runs, even when I'm rendering video! and the pc temp is fine with a single acoutipack casefan) Highly recomended although the psu was expensive).

Anyway hope this helps anyone else who doesnt realise that the have to push the power button to wake up from sleep!!! And it only takes a few seconds to power back up...

Still havent solved the hibernation issue, but I dont really care too much now as its not something I'm likley to use a lot.
