i keep losing my internet connection. i am assuming its a problem with the phone line although the phone istelf works. a little box appears saying 'limited or no conectivity' something about local area connection. there is a repair button, but it didnt do any thing. it tried to renew my ip address but couldn't.
i have a e-machine C2825. windows XP with all updates. I.E. and mozilla. i have dsl with verizon. is there some kind of check list i can go through to make sure its not 'me' :)

Step through the checklist below to help diagnose the problem.
1)Turn your modem off and then back on again. Most Internet connectivity problems are solved by turning your modem off, waiting 15 seconds, and then turning the modem back on. After waiting 45 seconds to allow the modem to synchronize with the server, try reconnecting to the Internet. If your modem doesn't have an on/off switch, unplug the modem from its power source in place of turning it off.

    2) Check your DSL hardware connections. Use the lights on the front panel of your hardware device to verify that it is connected correctly.

3)Verify that your Network Interface Card (NIC) is functioning properly. If you can't connect to the Internet and the light next to the Data port is off, troubleshoot your NIC.
    Once you are connected:

The test will take a few moments to complete.

Biggest thing i have with dsl is people adding new devices to the phone lines with out filtering them, thus causing internet troubles.

verizon have changed to hawaiian tel. if i switch off, when i switch back on sometimes it reconnects, sometimes it doesn't, but even when it does it loses it again. we have unpluuged everything and plugged it all back n again. i have rung hawaiin tel..they told me to do just that, told them i already did it, but went through the connections again. they said it was working fine (which it was at that precise moment). as soon as i put the phone down , the connection went again !! i dont think i have a 'network interface card'

i dont have any devices. only the one phone, and the dsl modum. bruce has just got off the phone again with hawaiian tel. he unplugged the jack from the wall, but hawaiian tel said it still connected. he is checking the stuff outside, in case its weather related.

well, the conection went in and out all day yesterday. since writing to you lot, i have discovered that there are 'issues' with the transition from verizon to hawaiian tel. there is also the 'copper wire' which in my case is about 40yrs old. bhubby is gonna rewire from the junction box. then there is the weather. we have been having rather a lot of it lately. so it might be their bits of copper at fault. there appear to be too many variables to waste MG time . so i will wait until the rewire, and untill i can talk to someone at hawaiian tal on monday. i hate it. i feel 'cut off' :(

just to bring you up to date, i finally got this sorted YESTERDAY!! it turned out to be the both the junction box and the wire from there to the pole. i have rung hawaiian-tel almost EVERY day. we have replaced all the phone lines from the box through the house, all the boxes inside, new phone, reinstalled the dsl cd, and spent hours and hours on hold waiting for 'tech'. i rang them today to ask if i was still expected to pay my internet charges. thay asked how many hours my connection was lost in total, when i said that internet that cuts out every five mins is the same as none at all they said they could only refund by the hour not in five min sections. i said 'make it a month then, they refused. good job there is no alternative huh. anyway, good that its sorted at last and that there isnt anything wrong with the puter.
