I apologize but I cannot find where to post my question

1 Bought a new internal drive
2 going to use it as a drive for windows 7
3 my xp64 wont see it
4 my linux live can see it
5 linux live wont format the drive in any fs, it gives and error about mounting
6 finally my question how do i format the new internal drive when windowsxp64 wont see it?
Thanks and sorry again for posting in the wrong thread

    Hi,

I'm thinking the mounting error may be because there is no partition created before you try to format.

Which linux Cd are you using? Does it include Gparted? Gparted should be able to create a partition and then format the partition.

I am not sure what it has just a live cd that allows me to fix some problems with windows, i do not know linux very well.

Do you wish to boot gparted Live from a CD or flash drive?

You are way back on version numbers since the current one is ubuntu 11.

But try the command sudo apt-get install gparted at a Terminal prompt. Terminal can be found at (Applications->Accessories->Terminal (or you may also find it with an icon that looks like a black computer monitor.)

That should initiate the install process.

If you still have problems I can boot up to Ubuntu but I only have the latest version 11 so my desktop will likely look different than yours.

@sach2, I may be wrong but I think the OP was saying he uses a LiveCD of Ubuntu which has no Gparted on it and he is looking for a LiveCD of Gparted.

Where is XP not seeing it? My Computer or Disk Management? or both?
Right click My Computer and select Manage, then select Disk Management or go to start>run> diskmgmt.msc

Good point. I was thinking the Win7 CD wouldn't see the drive. Definitely, take a look in Disk Management in XP see if the drive shows up. Then, if seen, you can create a partition and format it.

Yes, go ahead and just put gparted on a USB drive. You can always put your Ubuntu back on the USB later.

Live Linux Creator will put either Parted Magic or Gparted Live on a USB flash very easily. Both contain gparted program. Parted Magic includes a desktop and ability to get online for only a slightly larger download ~150mb compared to ~120mb for gparted alone.

I put a partition table on it with parted magic
the booted the other live key and formatted it but i am unsure that that worked, I still cannot see the drive in xp64, there is no master and slave issue with sata, so im curious i had to reset the the boot order back to my xp drive
the system boots up and the bios gathers the data and tries to hand it off to the empty drive
    to sum up
1 used parted magic live to create a partition table (not sure of success)
1 used ubuntu live 7.10 to format the drive (not sure of success)
i am very tired and not thinking to clearly , what did I mess up
    or
    what should I do now?

You did not mention the size of this new hard drive. Older computers had limitations in the BIOS that does not allow them to see hard drives beyond a certain size. You might have to break this new hard drive into partitions small enough for your XP computer to be able to see it.

My advice, use one of the linux tools to divide the new hard drive into 2 or 3 smaller partitions. Large enough to put windows 7 on but small enough that the BIOS can see it.
What is the size of the hard drive that XP64 is on? That will give you an idea of the hard drive size your computer can see.

my MOBO is a gigabyte p45t-es3g, its is less than a year old.
    the part size shouldn't matter.
i see what you mean about older boards though.
    xp64 is on a 150g drive
my externals is a 1T drive does that matter?
