My hide and unhide folder option is gone???? I go to start\settings and there is no folder option there anymore. I go to display properties\web\folder options button\view and hide and unhide button is not there. Why would it disappear? Where did it go and how can I get it back? Its not a real big deal its just now I know its not there and I want it back (LOL). Please help and as always Thanks

Hi M8 at the bottom of my screenshot you will see the string to follow, just click the plus signs next to each one
So firstly click the plus next to HK KEY CURRENT USER
then carry on with each one until you come to Advanced then click on that and the values will open up in the right pane

Highlight hidden in right pane then right click to modify

I did found it and changed it to the (1) and restarted but hide and unhide is still not there. Is there anything else I can try? As always Thanks....

    Hi Banc
Ive just read through the thread again, i misread what you wanted i thought you wanted to use the option to show or unhide the files
Which changing the value will do, but you dont want to do that you just want the option available in folder options should you need it

Sorry my bad, getting the menu back is a different thing altogether and i aint got a 98 box to play with
Ill have to look into that a bit further, unless one of the other guys with 98 come up with something

In the meantime changing the reg value will enable you to show/unshow hidden files or folders if you so wish

Ok Banc lets try this one its a slightly different key so follow the lines at the bottom as before, once you get the screen like shown in my new screenshot make sure the value is "group" for the string "type" just like mine, close regedit hit refresh (F5) and check to see if its there
Im confident this will work ;) (fingers crossed) :p

Let me know how it goes

Damn thats strange, i cant imagine how you lost that option if you changed that reg key it should be there

Well as i said if you need to see hidden files at the moment you'll just have to change the registry value from the first screenie i posted

This is only a temporary fix for now, depending how bothered you are you could try the system file checker tool and see if maybe a file is corrupt
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;185836&Product=w98
theres some info on how to use it

When i get some time later I'm going to have a look at the SHELL32 dll where this info is kept and see whats in there, ill post back once Ive come up with something

So keep an eye on this thread, as I'm a stubborn bastard so we'll get it sorted one way or another ;)

Ok i havent forgotten about this, been looking into it in my spare time and the Shell32.dll definitly holds the relevant information

So i would try replacing the DLL with the one from your 98 cd, you can do this by either using the System File Checker
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;185836&Product=w98
follow the instructions on that link to replace one file

Or you can copy the file from your 98 cd manually, youd need to copy it to your desktop or somewhere then reboot into safe mode to replace the original
Its located in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder

The one on the CD is located in the WIN 98 41 CAB file

Let me know how that works out
