    Hi all,

I woke up at about 2am in the morning after sleeping on the lounge just in time to see a special on cable about data mining and internet security etc.

I run anti-spyware malware etc, but my IP address is expossed and the forces of evil will trace my activities online banking, browsing, credit card purchases etc.

Any way after the fear of god was put into me I thought I might have a look protecting my privacy online.

Any advice I have 3 PC's XP, ME and Debian respectivley, all sharing the XP internet conection,

    Any suggestions gratefully accepted

    Phil D

The only ip address that is shown would be your isp address ....not your computers.

if you wanna hide it anyway use Torpark. Well you don't hide the IP but you give a different one. It's funny accessing Google and getting the option "go to Google Germany" while I'm at Greece ;)

    Ok Guys,

Have I been misled? Is google not really storing up my searches and selling them to the internet mafia? Are bad people not watching me log on and tracing me through my IP?

Did TV really lie to me?

Thanks for your replys, but I may be over reacting

You do not really have an IP, your IP belongs to the ISP, and that is as far as it can be traced.

You can not Hide an IP, because without it there is No Internet surfing.

When you hear stories about Hiding what it really means that people log to a 3rd party proxy and surf the Internet through the Proxy, so wherever you go the other side see the proxy IP.

It is a cumbersome slow way to use the Internet and it is not secure because the Proxy people know you real IP and can trace every thing that you do.

You need the IP, it's like your phone number. You call up google, they use caller id to see you're in germany so show you google germany, or spanish, or whatever. they can't send you their webpages without that, and the only way to 'fake' it is a proxy. Torpark(linked above) is like sending someone a mail message, but putting it in several other envelopes: I want to send you mail, so I put it in an envelope addressed to you, then put that in another envelope, and that in a third, and mail it. The first person to get it mails it on to the second, then they mail it to you. Any of these people knows either that I sent a message, or that you recieved one, but not both. It is much slower than normal, but is also unbreakable. Most people don't need it.

Ip's information can be traced to customers individual locations, thats how they catch child porno users and such. But it requires a subpena to your isp for that info, not info that a regular user can obtain. I know this as we just recently was working with the fbi on such a bust and with the proper subpena we give them the customer information on said customer.

    3 day trial at Hide-my-ip.com.
I tried it. seems to be just what you were looking for....and it seemed to work well.

    What working well means?

Did you check with the proxy services and they said that they do not know what your actual IP is, and that would not divulge it if subpoena by the court.

Did you check with your ISP and they do not have a recorded of which real IP is assigned to you when you surf?

Out of sight is Not always out of Mind.confused

This is true, however, since the main object seems to be to keep the real IP address from showing up, this seems to work. It still shows an IP from my ISP but does not show that it is attached to a server in my area. As I'm sure you know, almost anything can be found out with the right preseverance, but there are too many easier targets out there. Sometimes, only a little prevention is necessary.

A day or two ago I said that "Hide My IP" seemed to be a good program.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE TRIAL VERSION!!!
When the trial period ended and I uninstalled the program, I ended up with a home page hijacker that sends me to their website no matter how many URL's I type in or where I try to go!!!
Heck of a way to gain a potential customer's trust, isn't it????

OK I tried the paid version of hide my IP and it works well, it changes your IP to somewhere else is all, but there are problems with that too! I installed it and tried to go to eBay and because if the country I was reporting an IP from I wasn't allowed on eBay, I changed the IP till it came up with one from Germany, and it threw me into eBay in Europe, so I guess the way to look at it is yes it works...maybe a little to well. The paranoia is what a lot of money grabbers are betting on, and while the problems of having a computer on line are real, I think they are overblown to frighten the average user into spending money on something that they really can get better for free! Besides if you install their software how do you know they can't get around it and get into your computer?? Anyhow there are a ton of great programs right here at MG to protect your computer, and when you come up with a really nasty bug there are tons of very good people here that will assist you. As far as keeping your private parts private, well once again all you need is here at Major Geeks. Geeeezzz I just reread that and sound like a commercial so I guess I have to add that I am not a compensated endorser for Major Geeks but an actual customer.... I did remove Hide my IP due to a couple of reasons, first I spent more time trying to find an IP that would let me in to any site I wanted to go to, and I figure between MY ISP's IP and my router's IP that by the time they get to me then they can have it! Almost see there are 3 computers hooked to the router and 2 are always running and about half the time all 3 are!

Just a question...Did you have the "Require a US IP Address" checked?
If you did, it should have given you an IP address for the US and your "German" problem would have been taken care of.

Also...reference to an earlier post of mine. When you uninstall the trial version, it tells at the bottom of the page how to change the settings back so you aren't redirected to their homepage. (My Goof!!!)

I dont seem to get why do you want to hide your ip address ? , only ppl doing illegal activities need that , and they already know how to do that , so what are you trying to get to ?
if you have a decent antivirus , firewall , antispyware .. and you are surfing "secure" websites , then you don't need to hide your ip address
and believe or not , if you are worth the trace , you will be traced , even if you are using million proxies ..

Well there are a couple of reasons, ever go to a site and they tell you your IP address? Ever look at the overview page of Zone Alarm and see how mnay times ZA has blocked? Ever go to a site and the ads seems to be geared towards your area?
No my friend this is just like the VA laptop that was stolen then recovered "and the info on it was never accessed" but yet I still get 5-6 e-mails a day from mortgage companies and real estate agents wanting me to use my VA benefits.... It's all about privacy, something that seems to be hard to have these days.
