I don't know how safe this is or if it will do any damage to the hard disk physically or what not, but theoretically you might be able to remove it's drive letter each time you don't want it to be seen, then add it back when you want to use it.

If you remove the drive letter, you won't see it when you open My Computer or anything, you will see it during boot up, if they know what to look for.

As long as whomever you don't want to see the drive doesn't know how to get into the computer management and assign a drive letter, this should work.

The other option is to assign permissions to it, but that depends if your OS is will support it and setup as one user or multiple users and if you are the only administrator or if everyone is.
    Make sense?

oh ok ..... following on from you post Karl, Powertoys for XP or more accuratly TweakUI part of that pack.. does allow you to remove a drive letter from being seen.

run TweakUI and click My Computer > Drives > untick the drive you want hidden... tick it again when you want to see it.

again I dont know how this will affect your data, but I tried it with a empty partition on my PC that I use as a Swap File.

won't hide it but you could put permissions on it so only your account can access it.

    Right, as I said earlier....

"The other option is to assign permissions to it, but that depends if your OS will support it and setup as one user or multiple users and if you are the only administrator or if everyone is"

What are the details about your OS and the users?

You could always just make a folder in the hard drive, put all your data in that one folder, and then hide that so it's not viewable? I know this isn't a solution, but it's an alternative

JonJon's solution is what I would recommend as well. It's the simplest and safest regardless of OS. If it doesn't satisfy you then you're just greedy...

Well I tried my option above out over three days by hiding a HD .. rebooting, unhiding and data still there... I also have a stack of MP3s on that drive which I queued up and then hid the HD and they still played ok.

just a pain to keep unhiding it when you would need it.. but I doubt anyone will want to go through the process of finding TweakUI and then locating the oprion to hide/unhide.

plus this way even if they went into My Computer it doesnt show .. but setting access rights to the HD will still show it in MC, its my best option to hide the HD other that pulling the HD power cable each time you want it hidden.

Here is how to hide your hdd:
    1.Open your case.
2.Take out the hdd in question.
    3.Close the case.
4.Put the hdd in a cardboard box.
5.Tape this box closed then put that box in a box.
    6.Tape this bigger box closed.
7.Put the whole thing in another box.
    8.Tape that one shut, too.
9.Put the box in a steel crate.
10.Buy a fingerprint scanner and voice recognition security device.
11.Place a lock with 2 keyholes on the crate's door.
12.Place a combonation lock on that lock.
13.Put the two keys in seperate boxes.
14.Mail these to seperate secret locations.
15.Setup an internet account to have them mailed to you when you need them.
16.Mail the crate to another secret location.
17.Setup another internet account to have this mailed to you when you are ready.
    18.Good job! You're done :)

If you're not comfortable with the solution already offered, you might want to look at a partition management program like Partition Magic. Programs like those will usually let you hide and unhide hard drive partitions at will. Only trouble is, you'll have to re-boot to complete either operation.

I've not heard of any real concerns about data safety with software of that kind, provided that you know what you're doing with it. Do remember that there are no 100% guarantees -- especially if you don't take the time to read the documentation. That's particularly important with partition management software.

No, but they would argue with me why i am using soo much space(music).

"won't hide it but you could put permissions on it so only your account can access it."
    That would be great.
    How would i do it?

I do this with the stuff I don't want my kids to see, as some of the jokes and pix my friends send me can be nasty. Otherwise, there is the method Los Alamos uses to protect HDs with nuclear secrets: hide it behind a coffeemaker in the kitchen.
