High Ping Spikes when playing Battlefield2

i need some assistance if you please
(i am a little clueless when on PC's when i get to this level :confused)

I have a 6.1mb broadband connection, i have a 256mb graphics card, gb of ram etc... i play BF1942, C&C3 regularly with absolutely no problems yet when i play BF2 i very frequently (every 10-15 secs at least) get rediculous ping spikes during play, my graphics are set to there lowest and i know my machine could handle better, when i originally purchased the game it played with no problem, then i stopped playing it for about 6 months and when i came back to it this was happening, iv defragged, cleared a lot of crap of my machine, looked at minimising the running processes during play but nothing seems to improve it!

can ANYONE give me any help, if you need MORE information then just ask!
