Well it's community college but just the same. Anyways I've been considering to buy a new lap top so I can take notes, record the professor and do work of course and all those lovely things that come with college. However I've been stuck if I should get a pc lap top or a mac book. I heard macs are great school wise but I also want the lap top to play a few games here and there so I'm stuck any suggestions :D? Ah I also forgot if it is recommened I should go for pc which os should I get xp or 7?

Definitely DO NOT get XP. If you can even find a computer that comes with it any more, which I don't think you can unless you buy a used one. There's no point in buying an OS that's several years out of date.

As for PC or Mac, that's really a mostly personal choice. There are people who swear by each.

Unless the student is going into visual arts or the like, I would stick with a pc running Win7.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Agreed w/ Tibbs and Tim. The amount of freely available Windows-compatible software alone should sway the decision towards getting a PC, especially in an educational environment...

I agree as well go with PC just on the the price alone, over here Macbook air's start at around £8-1000 where you could get an equivalent PC for £4-500.

If money is one of your concerns being a student.

Agree with all above in going PC.

    to Tibbs:
Guaranteed just as many swear at the other also.
As for XP being out of date, it will still be getting security updates for a while.
And, I believe, it is the most stable and dependable Windows yet.

6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other.
It all boils down to what each individual is comfortable with.

True, it's still getting security updates. But being that Windows 8 is almost ready for release, XP is pretty much a dead duck. And like I said, if you're buying a new machine, you can't find one with XP. When I bought my laptop a year ago it wasn't available, only Windows 7.

Just, i.m.h.o., go for the P.C. for the hardware and Win 7 for the O.S.
P.C.:- Better value for money; more upgradeable; more software available, (usually, most Mac software has a P.C. version available). Unless, as Tim said, you want/need to use a Mac specific piece of software.
Win 7:- Because it is the only fully developed P.C. O.S. that is not already semi-obsolete. Win 8 is not quite here, yet and XP is no longer a truly up-to-date O.S, regardless of the devotees. The exception to this would be if you are procuring an old/underpowered P.C., then yeah, I would stick to XP for a while in that scenario.
P.C. also better for most game compatibility, i.m.o.

    Hi

I think the advise here already is perfect in that while Macs are superb machines, they are expensive for what you get, the limiting factor is software thats cheap (there are many freewares for Mac but not as many as PC) and that you like to game also.

As for Windows version, I'd go with Windows 7 for a raft of reasons, stability to security to name two, yes some will say Windows XP is stable on their PC and they will be right, but when you work in a building like I do with 5000+ Windows XP PCs then you know how thats not really the case, its a great OS but now showing its age, in part down to hardware failures also, as newer hardware doesnt in all cases have compatible XP drivers, so its not worth going backwards IMHO.

Whereas the few 100 rollouts of Windows 7 are stable as hell and chatting to Microsoft folk like I do the many many Windows 7 PCs they have in their buildings that are working well speaks volumes as to this newer OS, Windows 8 will build on this but its not due till end of year.

What sort of classes will you be talking? this could aid in directing you to a particular Mac or PC Laptop as laptops do have varying specs and if your a gamer then you will need a decient graphics card and CPU and Ram.

I'm agreed on the Windows laptop instead of Mac. You're on a Windows forum though.;) I have a feeling if you went to an Apple forum, you'd hear the total opposite (probably in a much more emotional way :-D).

Having said that, my daughter needed a laptop for school. She was adamant about a Mac. That's what students seem to think they should have. I figured since she'd be using it for 4 years, she should get what she wants. She was very surprised at how little memory it has. The lowest end Mac is basically a netbook (the air) even though I don't believe it's advertized that way...it's certainly not priced that way. I told her that I had explained before that for the money she would have had a much more powerful Windows laptop. So yes, you get a ton more for your money with Windows...but either would serve you fine.

If you're starting college this fall and you don't already own a laptop, you're going to need one well before Windows 8 is fully released. I'd go ahead and get a Windows 7 machine.

I suggest strongly, a Toshiba. I have one, I love it. It's far and away better than any Mac I've ever worked with. Windows 7 is an amazing OS. If you have enough room, and you are a gamer, an install of Windows XP might be useful for playing older games.

Having a Linux install is also a useful thing, since college wifi's are not exactly the safest things ever. I'd keep a live CD on hand.

That said, there's not a single thing that I've ever found that a Mac can do, that a Windows PC can't, or can't do better.

And I say this as a Graphic Design student. Besides, I can do stuff that's 'Photoshop' for free on GIMP on Windows that I can't do at all on a Mac.

Go for Windows 7 as Windows 8 if you are in colledge you will likely through their schemes be able to get Windows 8 for free or next to nothing.

Windows 8 is great in its beta for me and I'm testing it with multiple real world scenarios but it may not at present work for all, so best to wait until the RTM final release.

Windows 7 is as I have found is bomb proof! if my 8 and 12yr old neices cannot kill it then no one will, if you do then your are the cause.
