    Hi Everyone:

    My High Speed Internet with Cable Modem disconnects everyday around this time of day.
    Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought it was supposed to stay on all the time.

    O/S is Windows XP
    Internet Explorer Ver. 6

    Here are the error messages that I have seen:
    Internet Explorer:
    Cannot find server or DNS error with I.E.

    Email program, Outlook Express:
    TCP/IP error
    protocol POP 3
    Port 110
    Secure SSL
    Error # 0x800CCC15

    I regularly scan with Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and either Norton AV
    or an online virus scanner like Panda or Trend Micro. Nothing seems to be
    showing up that's unusual in those scans.

    Any thoughts you all might have would be greatly appreciated.

    Maggie

    Seems like your connection is corrupted Maggie, you have to do a reinstall

    # 0x800CCC15 SOCKET_CONNECT_ERROR Unable to open Windows Socket.

    * Reinstall TCP/IP. You can do this from the network control panel applet.
    * Open Network in Control Panel
    * Select TCP/IP and click on the Remove button
    * Reboot
    * Open Network Applet again
    * Click Add button
    * Select Protocol
    * Select Microsoft in the left pane
    * Select TCP/IP in the right pane
    * Click Okay
    * If you are using AOL or a network card you will reinstall them instead of the TCP/IP by removing them and rebooting and letting them set themselves up again.The above is a guidline you should be familier with your install

    Hi Maggie,
    I googled up a couple of references one here and one here. Seems like you have to uninstall and reinstall outlook express and establish a new identity file. The first site walks you through it with pictures. You might give it a go and see if that fixes your problem.
    Good luck
    Bil
    edit: oops sorry jujet, didn't mean to step on your toes :)
    EDIT2: hmmm . . . the instructions for the fix I mentioned are for 98 and NT I don't know if thiese are applicable to XP or not. I mean they will be similar I'm sure but the proceedure or access means might differ slightly.

    Removing TCP/IP

    Hi Again,

    I took a look in control panel to try to do the fix that was
    suggested. What I saw there wasn't the same as described in the suggestion. Perhaps the instructions given were for a version of Windows previous
    to XP? Anyway, I googled, and found the following information.
    What now?

    Thanks so much!

    Maggie

    Here is info from a webpage I looked at:

    How can I reinstall TCP/IP on Windows XP?
    When viewing the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is disabled when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected. In Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system; therefore, it is not possible to uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP.

    Thanks Jujet

    Hi Jujet:

    Thanks for that webpage. I read through it. Immediately got nervous! :D
    I have bookmarked it, to study and am hoping I can accurately follow
    the directions there. I have never gone into the registry and edited or changed
    anything there before.

    I appreciate the help!

    good thinking Maggie,if you notice the first repair has to do with checking your system files hence sfc.follow the directions
    Click [Start] [Run] and type sfc /scannow in the [Open] box.
    (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)
    If there is a problem you will be asked to insert your win XP cd let it finish its scan reboot and test to see if the problem has been resolved.

    Windows XP CD

    Hi Jujet:

    I'm afraid I don't have a Windows XP CD. My computer came with it preloaded.
    I have one of those CDs that one can use to restore the O/S.

    If I remember using those disks will really hose your system by reverting everything back to original install.Hold off using them Maggie.

    Great, before getting on could you check outlook express by going to Tools/Accounts/Properties/Connection and check to see that "always connect to this account using " is checked

    Outlook Express

    Hi Jujet,

    I checked out what you suggested, in Outlook Express.
    That particular box "always connect to this account using " is not checked.

    Outlook Express and Windows XP CD

    Hi Jujet:

    Sorry to tell you that the Outlook Express idea didn't work. I did as suggested and put the check mark in the box as recommended in previous post. When I tried to check my email,
    a login window came up. In the window it said Broadband Connection, My login name, password. I clicked OK on it, but it seemed like it was trying to dial-up a connection via telephone and it wouldn't connect, so I went back and unchecked the box and it was OK to check email again.

    I have a general question, if you don't mind? What do people do, if they need a Windows XP CD to repair their O/S and XP has been preloaded on their computer and all they have is the Restore CD ? Do I need to go buy a copy of Windows XP ? I think this
    question comes from reading that Elder Geek website that you mentioned. It seems like
    their main idea is to try that system scan but in the end, the solution might be a reinstall of XP.

    Thanks so much!

    Maggie

    One thing before we get any further,seeing as you havent done this yet how about reinstalling your outlook account from scratch again.
    Are you running Dell, HP or Compaq.

    Question jujet, do you think that simply creating a new identity in outlook, making that the main identity and then deleting the old main identity might help maggie? Might be a little easier to try that first maybe? Dunno, just a thought.

    I concur with you on this Bill, had already asked maggie to reinstall new account

    Oops sorry, DuH. (That'll teach me to read the previous posts not just skim them :) ) She might want to download RegSupreme and run it after she does that to clean up any left over reg entries pertaining to the old identity.

    If the internet is disconnecting same time every day, i'd say its probably just her ISP reseeting the IP, as you only lease it for 24hours (more or less depending on your ISP)
    SHould check your lease times, in windows XP just go into conenction properties.

    All this talk of reinstalling TCP/IP....

    TCP/IP is not on a schedule.

    If it works, but then doesn't, then does later, its nothing to do with TCP/IP.

    True Adrynalyne, but when you google the error code Error # 0x800CCC15 for a fix the results all state that doing the install/uninstall TCP/IP bit is the way to rectify it. :confused:

    OE/Outlook errors have never been reliable sources of info ;)

    Looks like the new account did the trick though.
