I just got a new hard drive with Windows 2000 Pro. 5.00.2195 installed on it. It’s an old laptop (300 m.h., Pent. II , 228 ram, 6 gig h.d.). I downloaded all the Windows updates. I’ve installed and run McAffe VS, Zone Alarm, Spybot S&D, C W shredder, and Ad-aware. No problems.

I installed Hijack This 1.99, but it doesn’t work right. I can open the program, but when I do a scan, it scans and starts to display my log, but before it finishes, a “Program Error !” window pops up that says “Hijack This.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.”

It shuts the program down. Restarting does no good, nor does rebooting. I get the same errors. I uninstalled HT and reinstalled it. Same thing. I don’t think I’m infected with anything. I am just trying to get it working for when I really do need it.

How can I get Hijack This to work?

Thanks for the link. On reading it, I did have it installed on the desktop (which was wrong). I uninstalled it with "add & remove programs" then manually deleted the icon as instructed. I downloaded it again, and reinstalled it as directed in C/program files/hjt. I then went to the task manager and closed all applications, and then closed all processes that it would allow.

I opened the HJT and it still did the same thing....opening, start scan (never finishing), then error message, then shutdown the program.

    I still need help.

Problem fixed. The latest version of HJT which is 1.99 has bugs in it and causes program crashes like mine. I downloaded the previous version 1.98.2 and it worked fine.

Here’s how I found out. I read that the writer of the program was MERIJIN so I went to Merijn.org.

Below is the program creator’s post about this probem.

    Jan.11, 2005 New & Updates on Merijn.org
……“In the last post, I blamed HijackThis crashes on the Ms4Hd rootkit parasite, but it seems these same crashes also occur on clean, normal systems. My apologies if I got people upset with this indirect hint that their system could be infected. If all goes well the 1.99.1 update of HijackThis will also fix this crash on clean systems. Meanwhile the old 1.98.2 version should work as a workaround either way.”

It’s funny that when first downloaded HJT from the Majorgeeks website, there were TWO versions available. The old one and one marked NEW. I downloaded the new one. When it didn’t work and crashed, I went back the Majorgeek download page and the old one was GONE!!! It had just been pulled from the site within the hour!!!! So if you want to get the old (non-crashing verson 1.98) you can go to merijn.org or download from this link:

    Hope this helps someone else.
