Hijacked???

I have an IBM R31 Thinkpad with 384MB RAM and 30GB HD running WIN XP Pro for about 2 years now. The system has been sluggish for over a week; slow to load new programs or to switch among running progs, delayed screen redraws, unusual amount of HD activity, etc. However, no unknown processes taking up CPU time. Last week I defraged the HD, deactivated system restore and ran a full scan of NAV 2002 and Ad-Aware with latest defs in normal and safe mode and only found some data-minig cookies, nothing that seemed too unusual. The system has remained about the same until yesterday afternoon...My TweakNow RAM Maximiser maxed out available RAM and I experienced constant read-write activity to the point where it took 10+ min to shut down becasue it was busy with read-write. Booted up this am and immediatley the constant read-write activity began. Have now booted into Safe mode again and am running NAV with even newer defs (8/9/04). Read-write acvtivity while in safe-mode seems to be normal and i will re-run Ad-Aware after NAV is done. PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok I had already read through that doc and went back and saw that I hadn't ever run A2 on the machine, so I downloaded, installed it, updated it and ran it to no avail...Meanwhile I got an email from Lavasoft about their new SE Pro product which I then downloaded and ran. I had run the regular Ad-aware already this morning with updated defs from sometime late last week and found NOTHING, however this new version found 93 new items...80 of which it deemed critical!!!! I removed those and also removed TweakNow 2003 & 2005 and now my system seems to be back to normal...so I'm not sure which worked but at least something did! Thanks for the help!!!!!
