Hissing or Screeching from Speakers

I have recently been messing about with things I don't understand trying to get my new headset to work - I got there in the end through trial and lots of error.

Now though, when my headset is plugged in I get a loud hissing from my laptop built in speakers and if I unplug the headset, I get a dreadful high pitched screeching from the laptop built in speakers.

Any idea how I need to have my laptop set up so that when I plug in my headset to use it, it takes priority and when the headset is unplugged, the laptop uses its own speakers?

The laptop speakers should take priority by default - try uninstalling your audio driver, then reinstalling. If that's not successful, try uninstalling/reinstalling the chipset driver, then the audio driver.

Are you sure you haven't got a 'go there and click on that' alternative?

 

Well, I guess you could try the Microsoft Fix-it, but I don't know if your situation applies.

I really would try the driver reinstall if the fix-it doesn't work - yours might turn out to be a hardware problem, but we must make sure we don't introduce new problems by skipping obvious steps.
