HL-DT-ST GSA-4084N not found by Nero

I have an HP DV5215US laptop with a HL-DT-ST Lightscripe DVD burner. I have had no problems with it in the past but recently have had children and grandchildren on it - mostly games but apparently some facebook and avi viewings. When I went to use it, both Nero and Cheetah software says there are no DVD burn hardware found, although both control panel and My computer shows the device there and "operating properly". I can read and play both CD and DVD's but unable to burn anything.

Have googled everything I can think of, and the only thing I can find is deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry or download a beta version of the hardware drives from 'Dangerous Brothers' web site.

I am very leery of deleting anything from the registry unless I know what it for or even running an EXE file that I know nothing about.

Any help or suggestions

Hi

The fix inthe main for this is to delete the upper and lower filters from the registry, but first uninstall Nero and then delete the filters, there is an auto FixIt method here

The issue tends to arrise when using multiple applications that burn disks or use the CD Drives, and purging the filters helps, but you "may" need to re-install the burning application of your choice again.

Deleted both Nero and Cheetah burners - ran the FixIt program and it said the settings already matched so no changes were made. Reinstalled Cheetah for a quick test and it said no DVD burner hardware was installed.

As I mentioned earlier, I had both Cheetah and Nero on here and had no problems until kids and grandkids started using it. feel as if they installed some type of software to view a video but no one said they did.

Any ideas?
