home made instal CD ?

Can one record onto a CD R from a hardive - a clean w2k instal w/ Windows critical updates, service packs and also supplemental personal choice software AND THEN use CD to reload back onto a hardrive just like a regular installation - AND have the harddrive be bootable + function correctly .?

 

well, i do know it's possible to copy it from a CD, but it is so highly compressed before extracting... i just dont know

I don't think that it is possible to make a bootable cd-rom of all that stuff.

What may be possible is starting with a fresh install and then using Norton Ghost or some other utility to create a disk image. Then you may be able to burn that to a cd and simply restore the image onto another computer.

I don't really know if that will work, but it's all that I can think of.

 

Well, actually...


You would still have to do a new install. But a friend of mine found a way to have third party software installed during the setup process of Windows XP, I'm sure you can do it with 2K as well. I'll have to ask him how he did it.


As for what I've done, my XP CD is slipstreamed with Sp1, installs with a custom default theme, instead of Luna, copies a bunch of themes into the theme directory, copies the Pro Resource Kit to the root of the drive, same Sun Java, and all the powertoys. It does not prompt for a product key during install, nor computername, etc.

You can also choose to not have certain features installed that normally wouldn't be available to you as well.
