    Hello
I have watched videos and read helps about the above but to no avail.
I want to be able to work on a file or folder on my win 7 x64 desktop while at my win 7 x64 laptop.
On the Computer page, it says,on the left, I have a homegroup.
I have set advanced settings as enable for network discovery, file sharing and most of the items including password.
When asked for the password I enter the one I made but when I click 'join' it won't work. I checke on the password and it is correct. To be sure I used the one windwos generated.
I have the settings for both pcs the same.
Can someone please help me get this started so I do not have to put data in a flashdrive and bring it to the other pc?
I know you need two pcs running win 7 and there are workarounds but would like to utilize homegroup and file sharing as a learning process and to work on the other machines's files.
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hello There,

Have you checked to see if the folder is showing has shared and it should come up on the other computer if not you need to share that folder on the network.

    Well,
first of all, thank you for replying as I am running out of help and ideas.
If you could stick with me I really would appreciate it.
I am not a novice but not a tech;if you could sort of walk me thru some steps,I know I could resolve this with your help.
I am looking at your note about sharing on the network and will see what I can do with the 2 pcs in front of me.
Could we pick a starting point and go from there?
I have already joined a homegroup and checked the boxes on the advaced page but I think you are right about the connectivity.
I need to connect within my home hnetwork yet am not sure where to look.

On the laptop I enter the correct password but it says i cannot set up a homegroup on this computer.
On the desktop, there is no place to "join"

When I click join now after it says you are in a homgroup, it says I cannot continue. I check the password as it syas and it is corect.
So I have a homegroup and it wll not let me join.

    >>Plodr - You have saved the day! I spoke with Belkin and altho Windows wants you to disable the WLAN partition, you cannot get on line if you do so.
I guess you need no router and need time synchronization to share files.
    Back to the flash drives.
I have spent hours trying and got to the point where I had a homegroup but could not get into a network - no wonder!
Thank you for the great find and I hope others read this and save themselves the time I spent chasing my tail.:-o

peterr, you actually don't need home networking at all for this as there is a far more satisfactory solution available in the form of TeamViewer. With TeamViewer you can work on your PC from any computer, either at home or anywhere on the internet, just as if you were sat at it, though I have mine restricted to LAN connections only. This can work either way - laptop can access and control PC, or vice versa. Although all the machines here - XP, Vista and Win 7 - are connected via a home network and can share their files, I've never needed to use it since installing TeamViewer.

The Majorgeeks download is for the non-installed version, but you can get the installed version from the author's site.

Good to hear from you B.
I have used TeamViewer before and I'm glad you reminded me. It is great.
I have been told so many things about file transfer I'm dizzy. The last referral which was written by MS was that the WLAN partition had to be disabled. Belkin told me if I did i would not have internet. I thouht I was helping by sharing this with some people. The Windows article also said you need two Win7 pc to do this particular homegroup file transfer.
By the time you read the restrictions it seems impossible or, not too easy.
Anyway, thank you for the TeamViewer reminder as that is what i'm going to do and destress about this other issue.
    Stay well.

    Hello
I am aware of so many with files haring and homegroups that I would like to try again.
I have spoken with two people who say it is so eay to set up that I watched videos about the 4 steps etc and I must have an issue wth my set up preventing this task from being accomplished.
if you could please help I would be grateful.
I started by setting up a homegroup on the desktop and the problem occured when I clicked "join" on the lapotop. I entered the password and it said Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computrer. I disabled my firewalls on both machines, and have tried all the combinations on the "advanced page regarding network discovery ,file sharing etc.
I said yes tot all except the public one.
Boh pcs are the same win7 x64. Everytime the wizard is involved or the trouble shooter I find my date is off or the time is wrong. I fix it with the world clock.
There is something peculiar for such an ez task to be unable to be completed.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Peter

    Hello
Since my last post I have learned some important things.
After slecting DST and synchronizing the pcs are stable, from that point of vew.
I called belkin and they said I might have to disable their firewall as it is so powerful. I may gain a homegroup but will lose about 50% security.
if this is comon to new routers I may have to accept it but if not, I would look for another router. Mine is new and up to date.
    Any ideas?
    Peter

Like a few others here I suspect, I don't have two Win 7 systems so can't use Homegroup to help you find out what the problem may be here. However I believe Homegroup creation is only possible in certain Win 7 versions, so what versions are your two comps using?

  13. peterr

    peterr MajorGeek

    HI B
I have Win 7 Home Premium which should be ok but good thought.
I just called Belkin again and this tech ran cmd promt>ping and because 4 packets went out and 4 returned on both machines, he concludes I should be able to set up the homegroup.
He is contradicting the other tech who felt the firewall was too powerful.
I called BestBuy where I bought it and the Geek said to return it for Linksys or Netgear as he has had issues with Belkin.
I guess it won't hurt to try another router.
Are there any current "letters" like N I should look for?
    Peter

  14. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

I seriously doubt that your problem is in any way connected to your router. The machines can ping each other - end of!

In Control Panel > Homegroup what does it say on the laptop?

  15. peterr

    peterr MajorGeek

The desktop says I have a homegroup.
The laptop box says "join" and I enter a password.
NOW, there is a contradiction as the error message says "Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer(laptop).
I have an erroneous setting in that the laptop is asking for a password to join the desktop homegroup BUT but after scanning with the password it says I can't create not join.
Is one of my settings in the advanced page wrong?
    I have both pc s set as;
    1-turn on network discovery
2-trn on file and printer sharing
    3-turn OFF public folders
4-media streaming is off by default( I don't understand the choices)
    5-use 128 - encryption
    6-turn on password
    7-allow windows
I really think one little setting is the problem

  16. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

You are right Peter, there is a contradiction in that response. In Control Panel - Homegroup there is a Troubleshooter, have you tried it?

  17. peterr

    peterr MajorGeek

    >>I have run the trouble shooter which says an issue was fixed but it still will not work.
A new fact is that when i tried to reverse the process and start with the laptop, altho it failed again, I got a message that I could retrive lost paswords from US and ps.
The point is that these are the names of the pcs BEFORE I changed them to DESK and LAP.
In other words the pcs are not being recognized by the new names but by the old.
As a side note Iave disabled all firewalls, soft and hard, and still no luck.
How do you rectify the name chnge? Perhaps that is why they are not connecting with each other.

  18. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

Name changes require a reboot before they are recognised.

  19. peterr

    peterr MajorGeek

    >>1-discovered both Windows three firewalls and Norton's were on
2-called Norton who said just uninstall and reinstall and Windows will be off in private public and domain. This did not work so I manually uninstalled windows firewalls, all three.
3-I tried to connect and still no success.
4-I got in trouble here - right click Computer >change settings box
I had originaly named the machines us and sp but to find then easier changed the names to desk and lap The lap defaults goes back to sp.
Worse there is a word within change settings called change which I clicked on and saw 1-domain and 2- workgroup. I thought if I typed homegroup in the workgroup box it would change it to a homegroup but instead it now says homegroup in the workgroup box.
So, after all this , I can create a homegroup but cannot join it with the other pc and have botched the settings I described.
I do not know if there is a way to rectify this never mind establish the homegroup.
I will admit to a degree of ignorance but there are some odd occurrences like Norton keeping 4 firewalls on.
Using the feature these pcs offer,ie, homegroup>fileshare is something most people would lke to be able to use and with limited mobility i certainly would like to use it. There is a glitch or a setting, maybe on the advanced page that is prohibiting this.
The laptop syas homegroup joined and alsohomgroup us 2 but no password box ever said succesful. it is a puzzle.
I really could use some help
    Thank you
    Peter

peter - in order to be able to help it is necessary usually either to be able to replicate a situation or to take direct control. Replication is not possible, not for me anyway, but I am willing to try and fix it for you using Teamviewer. However in my experience very few ppl if any are prepared to hand even temporary control of their computer to someone else, and that is entirely understandable.

I can't see this being fixed any other way though. Hope I'm wrong about this.

peter, I have renamed your laptop and rebooted it, but I don't know which machine you are sitting at. I have also set up your homegroup again and there is a new PW I will PM to you. I believe your homegroup will now work.

    >>B. I checked the name and it is l** as you say so that is good.
The password we both saw created was the same one as the one you sent me. Are you sure it was the right one as you said you changed them. It was TU2.......
I rebooted both, entered the TU2 password and it said, again, windows cannot create a homegroup on this pc.
The second time I ran the pssword it said windows encoutered an error.
The trouble shooter came on but no help.
It did say a homegroup was created on the desktop.
It should be straight forward but there is a problem somewhere and I do not think it is human error at this point.
    All firewalls are off.
I will continue to persue this as it is a case worth cracking and if any ideas come across your mind, pleas let me know.
Thank you for all your help

I would like to see pics of your network adapter settings -

Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center, in the LH panel Change Adapter Settings > right click the connected adapter, click Properties, click Internet Protocol v4 (TCP/IPv4), click the Properties button, take a pic.

Sorry peter, I didn't ask quite the right question here, though from the small amount of info I can get from the pics I suspect I'm not getting warm. However, open a command window (type 'cmd' into the Start > Search box) and type 'ipconfig /all' <Enter>. Right click over the output text > Select All > Enter. Close command window. The output is now on your clipboard, so open a new post here and paste. Do this for both machines.

There is no prima facie evidence that your network setup is behind this homegroup issue but something is blocking it and we need to find it.

I will send a second message and a third with the pics you request but I have information that may be relevant.
A while ago I had trouble with MS updates having to do with MSXML 4,6,+ 6x64.
Sequnia got involved so I went to their community and Maurice(Admin) spent some time coming up with a patch as it seems others had the same problem.
It took him quite some time to apparently delete the wrong items from my machine and get the right ones to install in spite of his patch. I saw those items once in "history" I think but can no longer find them. At the time, both Wndows scan and secunia scans were 100% so I left those irtems alone but I always had an odd feelig about them. With some work I could find the patch or link.
Could they be related to this issue.
I ask beause i did not know if the v4 you mention was related to the MSXML 4I refer to.

The pictures aren't necessary peter, and because of the position of the vertical scroll bar they don't show the adapters I'm interested in anyway, those offscreen at the top of the list.

Once you have done the Select All > Enter bit all you have to do is start a new post and and press Ctrl+V. That will paste the clipboard contents as text into your post.

Are you certain that you had the text in the command window highlighted and then pressed Enter? What that does is put all that text in RAM, and using Ctrl+V extracts it to whatever target you want - in this case your open post. You could practise by pasting into a Notepad document.

peter - I really have no idea why your homegroup isn't working or what else to dig into to try and find out, and neither it seems does anyone else so I can only suggest you abandon Win 7 homegroup networking and set up a network the way it was done pre-Win 7. It should be very simple. Works fine here on a mix of 7, Vista and XP.

    - Change the last setting in post #15 to 'Use User Accounts etc' (while there you can also turn off password protection as you don't need it)

    - Use the 'Change Settings' button in Computer > Properties to rename your workgroup to anything you like other than Homegroup.

Do this on both comps, using the same workgroup name on each and reboot.

If that doesn't work I'm pretty well out of ideas (unless it's that darned Norton you have!)

Just before you try that (if you intend trying it), just confirm for me that the following succeed in a command window

    from PC ping 192.168.2.3

    from laptop ping 192.168.2.2

this assumes the PC is booted first. If laptop is booted first, reverse the ping commands. (first to boot gets allocated 192.168.2.2)

... and if that works ok -

    from desktop ping lap

    from laptop ping desk

    let me know

Win 7 Home Premium x 64 both pcs.
I was unable to have my laptop join the desktop in a homegroup so I could share files. Foor at least 100 times the laptop would not accept the password given by the desktop.
I used an ethernet cable and when I connected the laptop to the router, the laptop finally accepted the password and was joined.
I tried to change the password and only when I connect the laptop to the router will it work. Although the pcs say the are joined I think it is like a time print in that those words were created when they were connected by the wire.
I do not know how to test if the pcs are joined wirelessly but I suspect not.
Do you know how I can test to see if this homegroup is valid and if there is connectivity.
I have never done this and am trying to read about fie sharing but am not getting the concept or procedure.
Should I exchange the router or is there a way to test this?
    Thank you

To see what is 'joined', i.e. connected to the network just click Start > Network (RH panel). Try this from the PC, first with both machines connected to the router by cable, and then with the laptop cable unplugged. For each test, if the network is set up correctly, you will get an icon for each machine, and if you click an icon you will then see all folders on that machine which you have shared. If that is OK you can do the same in reverse, looking at your network from the laptop. Do realise you will not be able to see any folders on the other machine until you have shared them. It may make things a bit simpler if you first disable password protection.

After plugging the laptop into the router and being able to enter the password from the desktop to the laptop for the first time(it may have jump statred the router or rebooted it) I was able, in a rudimentary fashion, to create folders on both pcs and remove then on both. I now have to refine the file sharing process with make believe folders so no harm is done.
    Thank you, B.,
    Peter
PS I have no start>network, unless I go into the control panel but it is a moot pont now. Perhaps your professional version has it.

That's great :) Does it still work if you remove the laptop Ethernet cable?
