Hi, guys. Hope everyone's having a good weekend! I'm going to reiterate my problems, as my past posts don't seem too relevant at this point. Well, except for the fact that my computer has taken complete leave of it's senses over the last couple months! So, after the "death chant" clink that lasted two weeks, my computer completely freaked and I couldn't get it to do a damn thing. It asked for a bootable disk when I turned it on, etc. I figured it was totally fried, so I went and bought a used piece of crap computer to get me thru the summer semester, and what do you know, right away the thing starts clinking and acting crazy, so I took it back to have it looked at. In the meantime, I am a neat freak, so I immediately hooked up the old broken computer the way it had been until I had a better plan. That night, with the computer powered down, I heard the dreaded "clink" that has dominated my nightmares. I came into the room and sat silently in the dark until I heard it again. "Clink" went the scanner that's been sitting in front of my face the whole time. What seems to have happened is a power surge hit, and the scanner, which does not turn off and was plugged into an unprotected outlet, directed it to the computer, which is plugged into a surge protector. I immediately removed the scanner and powered up my original machine and have been using it for three days since. It has clinked twice so far, but the only other problem seems to be that my usb port quit working. I installed another one and it works fine. Here's where I need you guys: 1.Is it possible that the scanner fried another machine, even after the surge was over? Should I destroy it with a bat? 2. I am also stuck with this old machine I bought when my current one quit, and it's hard drive is TINY(1275 MB). I know I sound like a dum-dum, but does this mean it needs more memory or a whole new hard drive if(and when) the original machine dies?
    Thank you!

does the "clink" more resemble a sound that comes from a cash register or from an electrical switch? .. and if you suspect your scanner to be destroying computers, why are you still using it?

Hey there. If you go over my post, you'll see I disconnected the scanner after probs with 2 different hard drives. The clink really sounds like neither you described, more like a quick, metallic, icy sound, like you'd hear if snow was thawing on a metal roof. Thanks for the quick reply!

id take a bat to the scanner ( i really love smashing things that have caused me grief in the past, i use my old hard drive as a mirror and a key ring :D )
depending on your computers mother board, will depend on what hard drive you can put in there. also depends what you would like to use the pc for :)

Thanks for making me laugh through all of this! The predominant marking on the mother board of both machines seems to be intel 95. Is there something else I should be looking for?

hi there, not sure how old your mobo is, there are basically lots of different hard drives out there, ata33, ata66 ata100, ata133, sata. you need to know the mobos ata IDE rate before you can make a decision :)
