hooking a joystick up 2 my computer

    I was wondering is there anyway I can get a joystick on my computer.i have a microsoft sidewinder but my computer doesnt have the piece in the back for it.I have windows xp.do i have 2 buy a special piece for it or can i just get a different kind of joystick.I really been tryin 2 figure out a way to hook the joystick up 2 my computer.can somebody please help me with this problem.

    so if i buy a usb joystick does it plug right in the usb ports?also how much does a usb joystick cost?and do i gotta go inside the computer to put a usb pci card in there?
