Hooking up a second case fan

Ok I recently bought a new case for my computer and switched everything over and it works now. The old case had only one case fan where as the new one has 2 and a slot for a 3rd one. Anyway I want to hookup the other fan which blows over the hard drive bay. The fan connector is a 3 pin connector of which I have one three pin connection on the mother board already in use. So after looking around the net a bit I found a 3 pin to 4 pin adapter which will allow me to plug the fan directly into the power supply which is what I plan to do. Otherwise there is a
3 pin spliter that runs 2 3pin fans off the motherboard. Am I on the right track here?

Best to run off your PSU Molex connectors.

The fan headers on the MOBO have voltage limits, it's possible to burn out the fan header.
Many people avoid using the MOBO fan headers except the RPM senser wire.

You can take more control with the 3pin connectors from the motherboard (or using a splitter) by using speedfan.
But I agree with ASUS as there is more power from the psu and if you have a powerful case fan with an RPM of over 5000 then best to use a molex connector.

Ok I bought the adapter and it works well. One more question though reguarding cooling. For fans I have 2 12cm fans one in the front taking in air and blowing over the hard drive bay and one in the back blowing warm air out of the case. The fan built into the power supply and one on the graphics card. Now isn't there supposed to be one mounted on top of the heat sink fins to the processor? Because there is not one on mine. It is a p4 2.53 ghz. Do I have enough cooling or does one need to be installed on the heat sink as well.

    Is OK to Disagree.

Do so at your own risk!

As I said a motherboard fan header has limits to the amount of power it can provide, exceed it you will burn out the header & maybe more.
I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 MOBO it has three fan connections (the Three includes the CPU fan) it supports cooling fans of 350mA (4.2Watts) or less, ( see page 28 of the manual) exceed that you can burn out!
    Why take the chance?

See this Thermaltake Smart Case Fan review, note bottom of the paragraph on the Mini Rheostat

You really ought to have a fan on your heatsink!!

Find out what size it takes and get one ASAP!

Dont cpu fans generally come with the heatsink? Mine did not but if I need a fan must I replace the heatsink as well? If not how do I determine the size of the fan I need and how does it attach?

    What model is your heatsink?

Where did you buy the comp? You can find out there...

You wont need a new one, just determine the size of fan the heatsink takes (usually 80mm but it does differe - some high end models take 80 and 92).

Let me know the model of your heatsink and I will do my best...

Ok it was originally a HP 754n computer I bought at staples a couple years ago. Not sure how to tell the heatsink model on that. I googled around and found a replacement heatsink for it listed as HP PAVILION 754N MPGA478 HEATSINK
    Hewlett Packard Part Number: DA193A-HEATSNK
I hope that is the information you need.
