Horrible Problem..

Hello everyone, my first post in here, unfortunately its an issue I have lol.

Ok here is my situation, I appreciate any help.
I bought a new PC a few days ago, a desktop. It has just been released and is pretty good so I was happy. I bought the base unit only, thinking I was being practical and saving money by using my old monitor.
When I got it home I found that my monitor does not work with my PC for some reason.
My monitor model is a CTX VL701 which can be seen here:

My PC model is a Compaq Presario SR5079UK PC (GB391AA) which can be seen here:

I contacted the Compaq technical services, they told me that I need to get a converter. The converter they mentioned is a 15 pin mini D Sub to VGA converter.
I am curious though, is a 15 pin mini D sub not the same as a VGA?
Also, on my PC, there was a cover over the VGA port with do not remove written on it, i obviously removed it. I had to add the screw pins to hold the plug in place.
There are two more ports in the PC, which I believe are DVI, but I am not 100% on this. Im not sure of anything now lol.
Should I buy a VGA to DVI cable from Maplin for £20 ? Would this work?
Someone please help me. Any solutions would be great!
