cannot get my sound card to work or my main cd-rom drive....have deleted these and re-installed...have gone to device manager and deleted problem devices...have run scan disk and de-frag...the beginning of these problems is when i ran an rts.dll file from ubi.com to get my cd-rom to read again. I have
restore disks, but cannot use system restore on the computer...the restore disks cannot go into main dcrom drive, but must go in my cdrw drive...they will not boot up...so questions....1. How do i get the sound card to work? have checked all plug ins/power...using device manager i get blank fields where i try to adjust volume for audio,,,also direct x diagnostic shows no sound card recognized...did get a conflict #15 when i was faltering around device manager on the sound.......2. How do i get my main cdrom drive to work??? As i said i have loaded the supposed fix for the cd/drive from ubi.com on the net for the rts.dll file, hoever it has done 0...have contacted ubi support and they told me to do what i did...Running windows 2000...which is the best free utility/utilities to diagnose/fix these problems...I know, i should have done backup... Ubi.com is the maker of the combat flight sim IL2 Sturmovik and associated expansion and add on products...both of these problems happened when trying to either update or patch IL2..

Do you see your device in control panel>sound properties>Audio tab? If so make sure it is selected.

Also make sure you have the correct drivers for your sound card.

And do you see your CD in the device manager? Does the drive spin up? Does the light do anything abnormal? What happens when you put an ordinary CD in?

Also we really need your specs if anyone is going to debug your problem. Like what sound card do you have? BTW those system restore disks (normally) will erase everything from your hard drive and restore to how it was the day you bought it, so I'm not sure you'd want to do that.

I see both the sound card...Digital Audio Max by Analog and the CD rom drive "E" in the device manager,,,have selected properties and the report is both devices are working...have deleted both devices and re-booted and they have both been installed with no conflicts or error messages. The cd rom lights up when i insert any cd and instead of waiting and then starting, continues to sit there....when i insert a cd in it and try to start a program it asks for a cd to be inserted....when i push an icon on the desktop it says there is an rts.dll error or that the inserted cd requires a sound card. A direct x diagnostic for audio does not detect a sound card. Also, when i go to the sound icon in control panel, it does not show any audio choices, such as volume control etc. Both of these things happened when i copied, to a cd rom, from the net, a copy of an rts.dll file ubi.com said would correct the problem of the cd rom not being recognized. Have the cd recovery disks, but since the cd drive does not work, don't know how to recover...have a cdrw drive i have been running from, but not sure how to get this in the boot sequence in BIOS when i press F2 to enter setup. Have tried using the recovery disk in the CDRW drive and selecting items to find files, but since i am a novice i probably would further hose things up. Have gone to the audio max website and they say contact the computer maker, who wants to charge me $25 for the help..To this i say...**(())$###. I am using windows ME...CD rom is a standard generic Microsoft approved rom...Also ,on both device have gone to "update devices" in control panel and tried to find other choices for both, but this did not work. Thanks............

If you goto start>my computer>then open your CD drive (E?)... do you see the files that are on the disk?

It sounds to me like your sound card doesn't have the correct drivers. Please post the name of your sound card.

Also try and post in paragraphs as it's quite hard to read your post.

    1. When doing the e drive(cd rom check) there were no files displayed...there was a message to insert a cd rom into the drive....a disk was in..changed disks and nothing.......however tried the Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 and the drive kicked in and ran the cd....no other disk would run..When inserting the cd, the e-drive lights , but with the exception of CFS 1, which has an aitorun feature ,nothing else works on drive E. Have a cdrw which is drive F and have been running software from there. As mentioned b4, the main cd drive stopped running correctly because an rts.dll error. Installed the rts dll file from the support page of the manufacturer , but still nothing....I have recovery disks, but not sure how to boot them, or get them to work to get things back to normal...
    2. Have no audio showing on the device manager tab...the card is a Sound Max by Analog inc..and is prox 5 years old...checking device manager i get the message this device is working properly with no conflicts, or any error messages being displayed in device manager...

Are you sure your disks aren't scratched? You have the original disks, correct? A quick google search revealed you can find rts.dll on CD2 of IL2 sturmovik, might try that one(it's in the root directory of CD2 and the expansion so try both of those.) Also did you install IL2 from drive F? Usually if you do that you will only be able to run the game if it is in that drive as registry keys point to that drive.

Sound Max by Analog? Do you use built in sound? As in the sound chip that is built into your motherboard? Or a PCI card that you installed? If it is built-in, post the make and model of your motherboard, if your computer is not a build, post the make and model of your computer(for example "Compaq 4400us")

No scratches on CD's....Pci card installed by someone else......the game was installed on drive E b4 the main cdrom drive (E) went ka-boom...will look on cd2 of IL-2 forgoten battles for the rts.dll......as i mentioned i can run cd's from the cdrw drive and they run fine, this is my drive F: and the weird thing is again, i could/can run Microsoft CFS1 from drive E and nothing else....the recovery disks i have..are they of any help as far as these problems...they would have to be run from the cdrw drive(F) and i/m not sure how to start that ball rolling... thanks for all your help..I hope you have a good Thanksgiving, and if this is the most major problem i face, then i guess i'm pretty lucky! :)Also will get make of the build......

The computer is an IBM clone...Pentium4, 128mb ram 1.2 gig hard drive

IBM clone? Are you sure that's a P4? Because that computer sounds too old to be a P4, what is the speed in MHz or GHz?

You know the minimum specs of IL2 are:

    MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Computer: Pentium III 800/AMD Athlon 700 or better
Memory: 256 MB of RAM ( 512 MB is recommended)
    Operating System: Windows(r)98/ME/2000/XP
DirectX: DirectX 8.1 or higher (included on disc)
Video Card: 3D video card (DirectX 8.1 compatible) w/32MB RAM (64MB recommended)
CD-ROM: 4X CD-ROM or better (Not recommended for use with CD-RWs)
Audio: Direct 8.1 compatible sound card
Internet/Network Play: Internet connection (56 kbps or better) or LAN for multiplayer
    Hard Drive Space: 1.1 GB

I'm suprised you were even able to fit the game onto your hard drive, not only that you don't meet the minimum amount of RAM to play the game. Maybe the reason your CDROM won't play is because it's slower than 4x? Plus your sound card needs to be directx 8 compatible.

i haven't had any compatibility problems w/ dx9. And I do play alot of old games like baldurs gate and even some DOS games, so IL2 should run fine with dx9 installed. Have you tried uninstalling it completely then reinstalling it?

Might also try a System Restore. You will not need the system restore disks to do this. Just goto start>control panel>admin tools>system restore, then follow the instructions in the wizard. Be sure you set it to a date before the problem occured. You may have to redo a few settings that you recently applied but it will not make any major changes.

I have tried sys restore, but no joy..............installed direct x 9...big difference in how il-2FB runs and the rest of the games....still no drive e or sound card...suggested by someone to install windows XP, but a lot of my old and favorite things will not run in XP, sure there are patches, but all will not patch....a question...if i download something on the net. not to my computer, should i copy to the correct folder, or move to the folder...also i have deleted FB and re-installed it about 5 times . Sorry to be a pain, but ignorance is truly bliss... :)

I could not edit my last messager per the forum 5 minute rule, my question on downloading from the net to a cd and then putting on my computer was based upon dowloading the "fix" UBi.com suggested for the missing rts.dll error...it seems strange to me that the main cd rom drive (E) will give this error and the cdrw drive,(F), where the game can be run, shows no error like this..I would not trouble you with these questions, but the boyz at Ubi have been less than helpful... :)
