Hi, im new to the forum, i had a question, following on from this thread.

But firstly what is with the reverse viewing? last post view first?

Anyhow basically, i cannot access hit counter sites, i originally though that extreme-dm site went offline/closed then tried to access my bravenet counter which wouldnt work and the netstat counter and that wouldnt work. So, ive checked the "notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file and i see thousands of entries mainly ad/counter sites and those downloadmovies.com, those crap spyware infested sites.

Basically i want access to those counter site, now the problem is the extreme-dm and bravenet entries are all over the file, i want to know how to release, so to speak, the three sites i want to access.

Also ive seen other "notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" files which have far less entries and far less comments like (towards the end of the file there is this....

Ive screwed up the URLs, so they're not clearly readable by a search engine or clickable.

    thanks for the heads up.

What does this new host file do? Is it a default host file?

Do i replace this new one with the old one?

Your hosts file is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc all the others are backups or were created by another program, you can delete those.

Hoster will restore your hosts to the Microsoft Default Hosts file when you run the program and click on the button for that option.

Err well since your asking, my pc is has Become very sluggish. I have a 500mhz, 384mb ram, win xp (not updated in years) and an 80gb hard drive. Now i only have about 2gb free at any one time, and i run quite a few processes. And i havent formated for over three years, and have many things from 3 years back. I know i should have alot more free space and i should update and i should only run a few processes but i need them all, and they worked fine till 5-6months back where it became slow, then it was fine and now its become sluggish again.

Ive tried getting rid of some stuff from my HDD, ive run the pc on the least amount of processes, and yet it still is stuttering, like every 3-4 seconds the pc stammers for a moment and back to normal, this happens every 3-4 seconds. This then effects music playing since, every 3-4 seconds theres a stutter and the music gets blurred for that moment. Ive run Spyware blaster, Spybot S&D, bitdefender, spyware doctor, adaware, registry mechanic, AVG antivirus (free and Pro), gotten rid of the .pif files, and i use sygate firewall.

i initially thought the hard drive messed up, but then the problem was solved without having done anything, and the problems back.

(im going to add this to the hardware forum aswell.)

Use a program like CCleaner to clean all the temp files from your computer. Defraging you HDD may help. If your system can take more memory, XP will run better, 512Mb is preferred for system memory.

Together with CCleaner, mentioned by S_P_D, tryCleanup! www.stevengould.org/ and EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575

as a 3 pronged attack on stuff accumulated after every net session.
I have been using these 3, all FREE, for ages now. Each finds stuff the other 2 miss.

    Use all 3, often. Bazza
