Okay, I did all the fundamental things on the read me first list - this is what I found.

CW.dll file was removed with CWshredder
Troj Swizzor.r was found by Trend Micro (C:recycler\nprotect\00023595.exe) and it said it was uncleanable.

I tried all of the alternative sites listed but I still can't rename, delete, or add to my hosts file.

    What else can I do?

Have you tried to do the above in Safe Mode?

There are also freeware utilities that allow you to do those things on the next reboot, such as Gipo@MoveOnBoot

Yes I did it safe mode - I also just downloaded the Gipo thing and I first tried to just rename the file on reboot - it renamed it alright but it left the original there also. I then tried a delete on re-boot but it won't delete it. Any other suggestions?

    Where is this file exactly?

If it's in Norton Protected Recycle Bin, either turn that off, or right-click it and empty.

Finally figured it out - Stopzilla has an advanced function that 'protects' your hosts file from being updated by an outside source - when I upgraded this must have been checked by default. They should warn us about that.
