Hi its Jade, Back again, however last time my computer was infected, the scenario this time may be even worse, but if anyone can help, you can.

I have a Dell Dimension E520 with Windows XP Professional, I wanted to clean everything off to give it to my niece, so I decided to do a reinstall of XP, well during the reinstall of windows, it kept saying several files couldn't be copied and I could skip them. Well I skipped them, and now the mouse won't work. I did a system diagnostic and the mouse was tested and did work during that, but when I loaded XP, again it doesn't work.

I tried loading my drivers CD and that hasn't solved the problem either, I tried a different mouse, I also tried booting in safe mode with no luck, I can't connect to the internet at all on this pc, please help.

    :confused
    Thanks Jade

Hi again Jade:wave What you need to do is go to the Malware Removal forum and follow the steps given. Sounds like you have a nasty.......

Did you try your re-install on a clean formatted drive, or were you trying overtop of what was already installed?

No I deleted the prior operating version before reinstalling. I checked my device manager and it appears my drivers aren't installed, however I can't get online and i do have the cd, but it won't install my drivers. Sighhh

Do you have access to another computer where you can download the required drivers to a CD or USB drive?

I downloaded the mouse driver and then used my passport and tried to run the setup on the other computer, however it would not run, it kept bringing up the installation wizard which kept saying it couldn't locate the device.

Is the mouse PS/2 or USB?

    Hello,
We seem to be skipping the obvious issue here, which is that critical operating system files were not copied during the install process.

This could have been caused by a number of things, but the most common causes are a faulty CD-ROM drive, or a faulty RAM stick.

I suggest you attempt to reinstall XP again as without the files you can't copy you may well keep finding more and more problems with the computer.

If you still get the error messages, then download memtest 86+ and let it run overnight.

Memtest 86+ can be downloaded from here: http://www.memtest.org/

Yes exactly, it prompted me to skip files because they could not be copied. I will download and give it a try thanks everyone.

Ok, I can't connect to the internet on that computer, so I tried downloading it and saving Memtest, then using my passport to transfer to the computer im having issues with and i can't get it to run, it prompts me to pick a program to open it with, any suggestions? BTW thanks for all the input everyone.

In post 4, you stated that you had "deleted" the prior operating system first. How was this done?

I put in the operating system disk to reinstall windows, it prompted me to delete the current system and I did. I've tried to reinstall again, but it continues to say I can't copy certain files and prompts me to skip the files, and when I finish I don't have use of my mouse, can't connect to internet, checked device manager, shows several devices not installed including my mouse, modem ect....but when i use the device driver cd, it doesn't installed. I'm lost.

Do you have a friend that could insert your drive into their machine as slave and delete the partition then reformat your drive for you? That would ensure you are starting with a clean disk.

    Hi Jade,

Either your disc is u/s or your CD/DVD-ROM is :( (as collinsl said, may be your RAM - Memtest is an image file which needs to be burnt to a CD and booted from, ask a friend to make a CD of it for you)

Try copying your CD contents to another hard drive - if it works without errors, it's your hardware at fault.

    Good luck.

I don't know anyone who could do that, can anyone recommend someone who could look at it. I don't think anything is wrong with the drive, just the operator. I actually live in Spring, Tx (outskirt of Houston) so if you know anyone, please let me know. Thanks Dawn

Ok, I made the bootable cd for Memtest and when I tried to boot from it, it says selected boot device not available.

    Hmm,
I'm not sure that's a very good sign - not usual, that's for sure.

I think it's time to go back to Post #2

I had that issue once, it was a bad stick of ram.
I agree test the ram, then format HD and reinstall xp.
Get your drivers from dell.com/support. Enter your service tag nr and they will have a list of drivers for your computer, (unless you have added things-then you need those drivers seperately)

When I had the issue it turned out to be a bad set of RAM slots on a new motherboard. However, as the OP's system is old this is less likely.

Have you enabled the CD-ROM drive as the first bootable device in the BIOS?
