Is there software with XP to setup for send info (PDFs etc) from PC to fax machine (and maybe vice-versa?), or is there any free (or inexpensive) software ?
Or, is there a free (or pay-for) service that may be a better way to go ?

    Hi

What version of XP are you using as XP Pro has Fax built in and here is some info on the setup and usage

Do you also have a DUN Modem card in the PC or just DSL/Cable as fax will only work direct from PC with a normal DUN modem Fax/Data card, if you wish to Fax from DSL/Cable then one of the online services are the best and dont off hand think their is a free one anymore, and some options below

    Oops !
Guess we need to change our signature (just did in fact)... didnt know there may be that difference between the XP versions, thanks for heads-up !
    OS: XPro, SP-2.
Modem: (per DeviceManager) 'Conexant HDA D330 MDC V.92 Modem'.
    Internet connection: Comcast cable.
Do we need to use an online service if we have cable, or may we still use the XPpro setup ?
Will take a look at your suggested links asap.

    Hi

Sadly cannot use the inbuilt fax software with cable, even with your compatible v.92 modem which is capable of fax/data you need dialup connection as cable data acts differently, so the online ones are the best option, unless anyone has come across a cable fax software.

I will take a quick search at some point over weekend and see what I can dig up as its been a few years since I did look for info on DSL/Cable fax.

    Thanks again !
Almost forgot, we do have access to a dialup connection (part of my domain hosting with Eskimo.com, but use cable 99.9% of the time), could we use that dial-up ILO cable for just faxing ?

Not knowing that ISP fully but if you have a DUN connection via them and allowed to switch from cable to DUn then yes I dont see an issue with using your V92 modem and the inbuilt Fax capabilities of XP (if the fax options are not listed then emable them via Add/Remove > Windows Components > Fax and Scan

But also do check with your ISP as they will know better, but if they do allow DUn then I dont see why not, may only be able to use one at a time tho
