How to use Mcafee for manual scans and automatic (after notification) virus scan updates only, and disable or remove all other Mcafee functions ?

Or, if need to, could do without auto updates and do manual updates from Mcafee website if possible.

    Ideas ?

    Thanks for the reply.
Have set all the menu settings to stop all realtime 'protection', according to the 'manual'.
And using another virus scan program, but would like to use the Mcafee scan as a dbl check (get it 'free' from Comcast, but thats another story) only.
    TaskManager shows...
    mcagent.exe
    mcmscsvc.exe
    mcnasvc.exe
    mcproxy.exe
    mcshield.exe
    mcsysmon.exe
    mcuimgr.exe
...all running, but seems would not need all those processes running for just the minimum virus scan option.
Sounds like there may be no 'pat' answer, but still holding out for a chance.

    Thanks again for the reply.
Have been thinking about going to IE-7, guess its been around long enough to take the leap :)
Will also take a look at the guide.
Would also like a 'little' redundancy with virus protection.
Am currently using Avast (with all of Mcafee realtime 'protection' turned off).
Is there any other AV program that would allow for manual updating and manual scanning while at the same time having a realtime program that could be 'turned off' while using the other program if necessary ?

So, guess what youre saying, among other things, is there is no other AV program that wouldnt need to be 'installed' and could be run independently without effecting the 'installed' AV and the whole computer system negatively.
So much for common sense redundancy, guess the idea comes from old age... and doesnt fit into new-age :)

If you don't trust just one program to do scans then use an online scanner. Usually these come in the way of an ActiveX control or Java. Housecall is one such website.

Thanks for picking up on the basic question.
Was hoping there might be a AV scanner that could operate from the PC, like Ad-aware does for spyware scanning (maybe a little faster and flexible than an online scanner), but at least there is an online option.
And, thanks for the url suggestion.

Get malwarebytes. The free version does not run in real time; the paid version does but it is safe to use with AVG also running in real time. It is a malware detector rather than an antivirus detector.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
scroll down to download free version.

Thank you for the reference !
Am not that up on the latest names for certain security functions (as witnessed by this thread)...
What is the difference between Ad-aware and Malwarebytes, or do they preform the similar function/s ?
Also, if you ever come across an AV program that functions the same way (ie offline, but all manual and not 'realtime'), please let us know.

    Thanks much.
Completely un-installed Mcafee and installed MalwareBytes plus Clamwin.
Really appreciate the reference to Clamwin... nice to see there are still some simple options out there.

Guess the key is... "dont trust just one program".

Noticed one forum where Threatfire (hips based?) was given good ratings and said would run along with AV program like Avast.
    Thoughts ?
    Threatfire site quote...
"Will your antivirus software catch the latest malware that just came out today? In most cases, no, because it simply does not know how to detect it yet. But ThreatFire's ActiveDefense technology does, and has proven to provide up to 243% more protection when combined with traditional AntiVirus products...."

Have been using free ZoneAlarm for years and have been happy with, but not sure how it ranks.
Do your preferences above work along with free ZoneAlarm and free Avast, or would we need to make changes to try them ?
BTW, is there a good site that describes and rates all these security options for the common PC user ?
