Once again, I turn to MajorGeeks for help. Can I set up my computer so I can access it from a different computer? And if it can be done but is too difficult for one of my abilities, can I set things up to access my Outlook Express e-mail from a different computer? I don't have a laptop, but I do pay some bills by computer e-bill. But I will be gone from home for a month and am worried about how to handle such things. Thanks.

How about using win xp pro and using remote desktop connection and also have a look at using "win vnc" over the internet (use google to find it)

Software recommendations are great, but that's hardly enough to be able to do this! What about configuration?

You can get web-based remote control software, that is easy to setup, as it uses http traffic ports and protocols that are typically already setup for use. (you wouldn't be browsing the internet otherwise) I can't think of the name of the software I'm thinking of right now though, or I would supply a link. PCtogo? MyPC?

Solutions such as Remote Desktop Connection (which is graphically the best I've seen, and has the perks of being Windows integrated), VNC (I'd recommend UltraVNC), and PCAnywhere require the software to be installed, and configured correctly for your network, and possibly your network configured for access. If this is the route you wish to take, you'll have to tell us about your internet/network setup to advise further.

Sure appreciate the replies. For clarity, let's call my computer at home the "Home Computer" and all the others the "Other Computer." Thought XP Pro's Remote Desktop looked like what I want until I got to the point that I have to set up the other computer somehow. But in one scenariio, I will be at a rental in a complex that has a community building with several computers that are available to guests. I'd like to use one of those computers (or one at a public library, possibly) to gain accesss to my home computer. XP's Remote Desktop looks like something for a person to establish contact between his computer at home and the computer at his work.

By Googling, I came across a program called LogMeIn, which has a free version. It looks simple. My big concern: Would I be making my computer more vulnerable to unauthorized access by using such a remote access program? I guess I should have made this part of my original post.

Ive been using logmein for a while now (bout 6 months) and have had no problems. I use it to access my server in the basement, my fathers laptop( he likes to tinker, i need to fix but dont want to drive all the way there!) and my brother in laws computer. It uses https. so its encrypted. and i havent had a problem yet with any virus, spyware etc. good program!!
If I understood my buddy correctly who got me using the program it can tunnel through any firewall and blocker software so you dont have to change security settings on the PC your trying to get to. You just install it on the computer you want to work from, and the one you want to access remotely.
    Thumbs up.
