The problem happens when I go to www.ibenefitcenter.com and the browser closes down, each time, before the page shows up. I can't figure out why.

I get the following message that is saved as a notepad document, on my desktop, each time:

    Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION occurred at PC=0x6944de
    Function name=(N/A)
    Library=(N/A)

NOTE: We are unable to locate the function name symbol for the error
just occurred. Please refer to release documentation for possible
    reason and solutions.

I'm on a windows 98 computer, using IE version 6. The browser has 128-bit encryption. I have Norton Internet Security 2003 Pro. I tried to unblock scripts in Norton Antivirus, but that didn't help.

I've allowed first and third-party cookies using the internet options/privacy/advanced buttons.

I've allowed the website using the internet options/privacy/edit button.

I've gotten all of the critical updates from windows.

I allowed third part extentions under internet options/advanced.

In Tools/Internet Options/Advanced I don't have "Display a notification about every script error" checked.

In Tools/Internet Options/Advanced I have "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" checked.

I've called Putnam and they said that the website works when they use IE.

I forgot to mention that I have Juno, which creates their own browser when I log onto the Internet. The Juno browser is not showing up when I log onto the Internet using IE. Under normal circumstances, I would like that, since I always do a CTRL + ALT + DEL to end Juno. I try to close their browser, since their server logs me off of the Internet, regardless of what options I choose on my PC, after 5 minutes of use.

I am able to see their browser if I click on the Juno shortcut, to get onto the Internet. The only reason I mention this is because it's something else that's not acting normal. I'm going to try to figure that out, as well. I can't ask their help desk, because they charge for help.

I have gone to the Windows Update page and downloaded the following critical update, but the Windows Update page still says that my PC needs to download it. I don't know why?

814078: Security Update (Microsoft Jscript version 5.1, Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0)
Download size: 318 KB, 1 minute

No problems here, however the site is down for maintenance.

you should note that you have an OLD version of the Java VM.

go to http://java.sun.com and download the newest one.

Thank you, Kodo. I hope that it can be fixed that easily. How did you know that it was outdated, if you don't mind me asking?

It was a Java problem. I went to http://java.sun.com/ and downloaded the current version of Java VM. I can now log in, with the 98 machine, without the browser page closing, automatically. After logging in I just get a blank page. This does not happen on my ME machine. Everything works normally. I have to re-install IE on the 98 machine, because I received an error today after trying to repair it through the add/remove program, in the control panel. I'll re-install it tomorrow. I think that will fix the remainder of the problems. Thanks for all of the advice.

This is sort of a long shot but the reason for the white screen may simply be because you are using sun's java virtual machine. There are two java VM, one is by sun and the other is by MS. MS used to package there version with the OS but now because of some problems with Sun they have stopped producing it. In many cases Suns version runs way slower then MS version. So it is likely that the ME machine still has MS's version well the new one is running SUN's version. I'd try just leaving it on that page for 2 or 3 mins and see if something comes up. If something does come up after that time I doubt a reinstall will help but you could always try. :)
