Hi. I have a Sony Vaio which I need to do a complete system recovery as it has several problems, including being unable to write CD's/DVD's. I need to back everything up, but not being able to write to CD makes this a little difficult! I have a laptop PC as well which is also connected wirelessly to my BT Broadband home network and think there must be a way to connect them both so I can do a direct copy from the desktop to the laptop. Can anyone guide me? Many thanks.

Is a router part of your home network?

Unsure! I have BT Broadband Home Hub and both home PC and laptop are connected to it. Does that help? Thanks.

    On both pcs

hold the windows key down and press the pause/break key
    choose the 'computer name' tab
    click the 'change' button

Enter a different computer name for each, say Tom and Harry

Enter the same workgroup name in both computers, say rescue.

    Click OK
    click apply
    click OK

On the Vaio hold the windows key down and press E
Right click the C drive and choose 'sharing and security'
click the 'I understand....... etc' message
In the bottom section labelled 'network sharing and security'
    click the line which reads
'if you understand the security risks...... etc'
    click 'just enable file sharing'
    Back in network sharing tick
'share this folder on the network'
    click apply click OK

close all programs and restart both pcs.

On the laptop hold the windows key down and press E
    click my network places
    click 'entire network'
    click 'microsoft windows network'
click 'rescue' or whatever you called your workgroup
click 'Tom' or whatever you called the Vaio
    browse for your files.

you can only copy them, not change them and paste them to the laptop.
I suggest you prepare a folder to receive them.

    Hope this helps
