Why an FM radio? Why not just listen to Internet radio? Does your preferred station not stream over the Internet? Most of them do. WMP gives you radio access also IIRC.

no mostly for all the local radio shows that happen down here and the internet radios don't have that, and i am not very fond of the internet radio (they will only play 1 genre of music while on the fm radio it varies and thats what is making the fm radio a little more entertaining)

If you want variety in your genres of music, then Pandora is for you. Have you tried setting up a Pandora channel for yourself?

What's mystifying to me is the purpose of your request, given that you could purchase a radio/MP3 player and set it "on" your PC. Why is it that you want the FM feed to go through your computer through the Internet without listening to "Internet radio." Does it have really good speakers or something? Is there some specific station you are trying to listen to? It's not clear why you are so emphatic about not being interested in "Internet radio."

To back up a bit, I'm sure you know that FM radio waves are broadcast over a certain frequency (in the U.S., usually 87.5 - 108.0 MHz) *through the air*. Without some sort of hardware, those waves can't be captured and interpreted into sounds that we hear as music. Your computer (from the question you are asking) cannot capture those waves directly because *it doesn't have the hardware*. There isn't a software solution (at least, there are none of which I am aware) that will give your computer the capacity to capture those waves and produce the sound through your speakers absent the appropriate hardware. It's like television. You have Hulu and other Internet TV, but to pull in TV stations you need a TV tuner card in your PC.

Baron- most TV capture cards have FM capability as well. I used to use one to record a local radio show that was not on the interweb. Worked very well, and it was not very expensive. Under $40 I am pretty sure.

I know you did not want to add any hardware, but that is the only way it will work unless you posses some good electric and modding skills.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks Linderduan!

I think the Baron is interested in actual terrestrial radio on his pc.

Some radio stations stream their broadcasts over the internet. It's the closest you will get without an FM receiver.

i think i'll just attach a real fm radio to my microphone input on my sound card to record radio shows to share with my friends over the internet why didn't i think of this before
