How can i get wi-fi?

I'm not very tech savvy especially when it comes to broadband and wireless. I'm looking to buy a new laptop and the one I was looking at says it comes with a wireless LAN feature. Does that mean I'll be able to go up to say McDonald's or whatever and jump on their wi-fi? If not what is it that I'm looking for? If your McDonald's or other fine eating establishment offers wi-fi (wireless internet) access, a wireless LAN card is indeed what you need. Most people prefer internal to PC card adapters.
