I have an Asus UL30JT The full specs can be found here :

It has a 13.3 LCD which i recently damaged and need to replace, but i figured why not add a touch screen since windows 8 is coming out anyway.

I havent really found a specific screen that is known to work with my laptop and I don't have the funds to make a mistake and get the wrong screen, I've also never installed a touchscreen or an LCD really but I am well versed in computer hardware for the most part.

Does anyone have some experience to add? or suggestions?

I dont know for sure and this is speculation but I suspect you cant. with displays they connect via ribbon cable to the motherboard. inorder for the touch screen to work you need the scree to be able to comunicate with the PC. This would mean that the motherboard needs to support a a ts screen and either have a separate cable for the touch screen element of it would be carried over the ribbon. Personally I cant see it happening but I could be wrong.

Well I am aware that i may need to install a controller for the touch somewhere on the board, I'm just not sure if I have to, and if I have to, how to do it.

I agree with Tueur,it's hard enough finding a compatible laptop screen, finding a compatible laptop screen and digitiser combined for a none touch screen laptop sounds like mission impossible.

Much easier to buy an identical replacement screen then the buy touch screen overlay kit, here's a few links.

Does an overlay mean its not going to be a captive touch screen?

You mean capacitive? You can get capacitive or resistive overlay kits but you'll have to shop a bit harder for a cheap, compatible capacitive overlay kit.

Yes, I meant capacitive. It seems like there are only a few that fit my 13.3" screen. The ones I find usually say they include the controller. Has anyone installed a controller to a mobo before? I've never actually soldered anything, so im hesitant to just start with my laptop. I see some have external USB hook-ups but not quite sure It's worth dealing with. Is it even worth it to get one that has an external hook-up, and cutting out a part of my case ect.?

If you haven't soldered anything EVER or done any major electrical modifications I wouldn't start with this unless your happy with the idea of destroying the laptop or your willing to put some practice in. Your problems would be a factor worse if you bought a replacement screen with a built in digitiser as they use a proprietary connector,if your laptop model has a version with a touchscreen and your laptop has the touchscreen digitiser connector built into the motheboard already to swap is simple but this is unlikely.

So your only real option in the usb overlay kit IMO.

No I've never fitted one, there's not much demand for touch screens in laptops. I see them more as a gimmick they are not more efficient than a mouse and the cost is also quite prohibitive not to mention the work involved, a new screen plus digitiser kit will cost as much as a cheap touchscreen netbook.

That's unfortunate, I was hoping it would be easier. Doesnt really seem worth it now. Thanks for the advice, and saving me a lot of trouble.
