Getting a new computer soon which will have geforce 6600gt card. I think the card has both a vga and a dvi connector but Im really really confused about it. Can anyone help me..
Im going to keep my crt monitor because I like it and its decent. Only thing is it got a wire coming out that has a 15pin(male) connector on it. Now, if I connected it to the vga slot on my new card, would this disable any dvi capability. If I got a convertor, that I could connect to the dvi on the card, and attach my screen, would this then enable the dvi technology?
One last thing, what kind of convertor would I need. I understand that it would one end would have to be female for my vga monitor but what about the other end that I connect to the dvi slot on the geforce 6600gt. What are they actually called when you buy them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. is DVI actually worth having over vga, since you're still getting the 'noticable' performance out of your card.

Alright thanks. Ive been advised that sticking to vga is better if you have a vga monitor and if your monitor is dvi stick to dvi. Like i said the geforce 6600gt had both vga and dvi connectors on. If my screen is vga and is connected to dvi using and adapter then itll just be the same as connecting it do the vga connector.
Appreciate your help, Ill just use the vga I think, unless the card only has dvi!

Using DVI won't give you better performance, per se. It will give you a better clarity. (Supposedly)

Anway, most newer video cards will have a VGA (Video Graphics Array) and a DVI (Digital Video Interface). Also, they usually come with a DVI to VGA adapter.

This is kindof like hooking a HD receiver up to a non HD tv.... no point.... your not really going to gain anything from hooking your old monitor up to a DVI port.... however the adapter is very usefull if you want to run 2 monitors.

I can't remember where I read this, but I heard that DVI is the natural interface for all moniors and you should really use a DVI connector whenever you can.....It supposebly has a faster response time or something. Any hear this?

Not really. The video card produces a digital signal->gets converted to analog(either by the video card, or the adapter)->goes through the analog cable->gets converted by the monitor back into a digital signal->and gets displayed.

With a digital connection, the signal doesn't need to be converted to analog and back. It just stays digital the whole time. This gives less loss of quality.
