    ... and not have my laptop trying to contact the website.

    I have even punctuated the website to
    and it still goes looking for the site.
    Note the extra dots in the link.

    I have tried various "Format-->Cells". Any ideas appreciated.
    XP Pro, SP2 and various updates, on my laptop.

    PS: Guess I should try something like:

    I've evn altered it to
    and it still goes looking for it. Maybe it is finding the original link in the cache or history? :confused Bazza

    Finally found a method that works.

    I kept filling it with dots everywhere until it stopped looking. :D :major :cool Bazza

    You should be able to initially type it without Excel immediately trying to go to the link. Are you not able to do this?

    Once you have entered a URL in a cell and you want to select it for editing, you can either move your cell pointer to it via your arrow keys and hit F2 or point to it with your mouse and hold the left mouse button down until the hand changes to a cross.

    You can't turn off automatic hyperlinks in Excel 2000, you have to go for later versions to do that.

    So you have 3 choices.

    1) Type ctrl + Z after the hyperlink is created

    2) preface the hyperlinks with a single quotation mark

    3) you can program an automatic handler see the microsoft knowledge base

    Thanks studiot and usafveteran for the hints.

    @usafveteran@
    Unfortunately, it instantly tries to access the link, and changes the mouse pointer to a hand when I hover over it. :cry

    @studiot@
    Thanks for your 3 tips. I will try them. :major :cool

    Can you just copy and paste the URL?

    eg

    • Copy URL from website by simultaneously pressing: CTRL and C
    • Then go to EXCEL cell you want to paste to and simultaneously pressing: CTRL and V

    Try it...works for me.

    Cheers

    The methods I posted removes the hyperlink and turns the typing into ordinary text.
    Any other method leaves the hyperlink in place so that Excel will attempt to gain the link if you access the cell again or press return while still in the cell.

    (It also removes the leading apostrophe as it does this in method 2)

    Not disputing your suggestion studiot.

    I'm simply stating how I can have URL in cell. Also, I can edit cell with URL without any problems by editing from EXCEL's little "edit window". To go to any other cell surrounding URL cell is no problem either for me, because I simply move cursor to cell name (ie A or B or C, etc) then position cursor on cell wanted and Click to continue entering data.

    I find using the edit window useful in avoiding problems.

    Now turning it over to you professionals...:)

    That is what I do, but in Excel 2000 (part of Office 2000) it just saves it as an active URL. :cry

    As studiot says, if you try to do anything in that cell Excel tries to connect to the Net. Very bloody annoying and frustrating. :(

    Haven't tried studiot's suggestions yet, but will do so next time I update my "Articles" database. Bazza

    But, that procedure saves it as text, not an active hyperlink, doesn't it? Then, as soon as you make it an active link, you still have the problem. Right?
