A long time ago I bought a boxed edition of Windows 7 home premium (not oem).
How do I create a bootable .iso from the DVD?
I need an iso of the OS to create a bootable USB using Rufus to install the OS to my laptop. External CD/DVD drive does not detect, boot or install from the DVD.
    Any assistance appreciated!

You can install Imgburn. It does what you want.

    Ooops, too late :-D

Thanks for suggestion. Unfortunately imgburn didn't get me a viable iso for a live usb install stick with rufus 2.3 program. I've tried magic iso and that doesn't work too. Any other, preferably free suggestions appreciated.

You ought to be able to install from an external DVD - I've just done so on a very modest Lenovo laptop. Perhaps this is a newish laptop? In which case it will have a UEFI BIOS and won't boot from anything other than the hard disk until you disable secure boot.
