How did you begin programming?

I'm spawning this off of the other thread that asks you what your biggest project ever was. I'm curious to learn how all of you actually learned how to program for the first time. Even if it was on an Atari or and old IBM. and spare no details! :)

I just liked the fact that I could create my own programs for my own purposes. That's cool to me. :)

HTML was my first overall computer language, but my first programming language was C.

I remember asking my old man how programs were made and he gave me a copy of GW Basic (think it was on a DOS Disk) and the manual back in the day... hehe... I remember writing the program like
    10 PRINT "HELLO"
    20 END

and thinking "cool is that going to print to the printer?" but it didnt.

I messed with GW BASIC and QBASIC for a year or so getting the hang of things before I got a copy of a freeware Borland C/C++ compiler. Also got my grubby eager to learn mits on a couple of C books from the library.

Have dabbled with Visual Basic and I wrote my thesis for final year of Univeristy in Java for ease of use, but my strongest language is probably C.

Have come to love Perl and even some shell scripting on the linux platforms...

    :D

I was about 9 and I had one of those toy computers that did questions and stuff, you know math english questions. Well it also had BASIC on it and I remember writing something out of a book that counted down to 0 and said blast off, I had no idea what i was doing at the time or that I was programming. Then when I was 16 I had a Turbo PASCAL Class and have been hooked ever since.

commodore 64 and BASIC when I was like 5, after that it was PASCAL and I think it was TURBO PASCAL in high school. After doing horribly in PASCAL, I didn't program again until I was 24 when I was put on a contract to support a library. They also wanted a website that visitors could check if books were in or out. Picked up an ASP book and the rest is history.

My first language? It was either Blitz Basic or Amos (both Amiga languages). I forget which exactly.

I used to crack games.  :( http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ruinkai/wvdepressed.gif

Oh come on, henrietta's book of spells!! It was only 5 levels long in the full version anyway! I was only 7 at the time....

Oh yes and I used to program new music into games too. That was kinda fun :p

i began on a VIC-20, then in School we used a PDP-1143. I taught myself BASIC on the VIC and I learned every inch of the machine typing games & apps from Run, Compute!, Compute! Gazette magazines. Back to my high school daze, I retook BASIC I & II (for the easy credit), CoBOL, ForTran, and Pascal. Then recently VB6 and Instant EXE programming on the Win platform.
I really like problem solving & being able to write an app to fit my needs.

Fortran and BASIC in college in 1979, several programmable calculators (including one that was entirely transistorized), BASIC on TRS-80 Model 1 16K RAM Tiny BASIC, then Z80 Assembly, PET BASIC then 6502 assembly, C64 BASIC then 6510 assembly, C128 BASIC, GW BASIC...

Then I got a life, and haven't had time to fart with it since, much.

I learned Watcom BASIC in high school when I was 15-16. I got hooked on programming. The next year, I took another computer sciences class where I leaned Turing. Next year, I learned Object Oriented Turing (OOT). My class project that year was an RTS video game. The next year, I learned C++, HTML and Javascript. The class project I did was an RPG called Assassins. (It's the original Hitman! ;) )

Then I went to college and learned batch file (and linux shell) scripting and VBScript (WSH and ADSI). This is where I've done most work, and taught myself far more than school ever did. I aslo learned PHP and MySQL in class. We also had a class on programming microcontrollers with ANSI C.

From there, I taught myself PERL, CGI, XML and a few others (I think). I've still nowhere near the experience I would like to have. I WANT TO KNOW MORE, DAMMIT! MORE!

I guess I started with RM Basic, but didn't really pay much attention to it until we got VB3 (on windows 3.1) at school then I just went through them vb4 (16 and 32bit) vb5 vb6, vb.net 2003, now I code with vb.net 2005 or c# 2005.
