How did you discover Major Geeks?

Got this idea from another thread...

I'll start:

About a year ago I downloaded Aida32 from... somewhere(?) and one of the menus had links to other sites, MG being one. So I checked it out and found it to be an incredible resource for freeware/shareware, and started visiting regularly to see what was new. Then I checked out the message board and was impressed at the high level of technical expertise of so many members. Lurked for a couple months, then I had to join.

 

was a 3dfiler.. when that closed, I and another person opened a site.. lasted a few and then Tim told me that he was opening a new one with Jim (or was it Jim telling me he was opening a new one with Tim ..hmmm). In any case, that's how I found out.

 

Found it once while looking for some software. Bookmarked the site as a good software source. Came back from time to time when looking for software. "Found" the forums while googling for an answer to a computer problem, and started nosing around the forums. Signed up fairly soon after.

 

I think I found Majorgeeks on Ask Jeeves....

 

MS told me to download spybot, spybot told me to download spyblaster, this was the download site. i always explore the sites im on so i joined immediately.

 

A friend and former co-moderator was here under another time (incognito from the site where we both worked), and when they fired me he sent me the link telling me this was someplace I'd probably enjoy. His original idea was to convince MA to add a cooking/recipe forum since that's how I'd gotten my start moderating, but that never really panned out (never even got a response to the PM I sent, if I remember correctly). I stayed anyhow.

 

I found this site from downloading a version of AdAware and the rest, they say, is history...

 

My discovery was similar to alanC's. Got pointed to MG while checking out a download. Been hooked ever since. The first couple of hours a day are spent reading MG posts. Just recently checking out the Lounge when one of my posts was "bumped" to the Lounge. Another has been bumped to Interesting Links but have not checked that out as yet. Software and Lounge take up too much time already. MG was the first forum I ever joined. Loved the geekiness and non-flaming atmosphere. Although I thought my knowledge is good, IMHO, it pales into insignificance compared to others with thousands of posts. It has helped me tremendously in finding free software that will protect and improve my PC use.

I belive I was looking for some little lesser known freeware utility for tweaking my dialup connection (whoa, back then!) and I was one of the first victims to the download page redirect to the forums!

I think I then made a very embaressing post about virus removal tools which I would much rather forget...

 

Taking a computer course and we had just got to the bit named " Aversion Therapy"!!!!!!!

 

i was havin trouble with my pc and i asked my lil bro if he knew of any good tech sites. he said "yeah, majorgeeks.com, they have a bunch of software and professional nerds that can help ya"

 

was doing a dogpile search for tweaks and was directed to a site called Tweakfiles, which in turn led me to 3dfiles. after they closed i wandered aimlessly around the web until i heard Tim and Jim had opened up majorgeeks.

 

I think I was looking for some progams and
was directed here by a tekkie in another forum.

 

A google search typed in "geeks"

Was looking for web site computergeeks.com Looking for pc parts, but I forgot web site name. (Bad memory, I got post-it's stuck all over the place, who ever invented them, I'm sure I bought them a car by now!)

Prior to MajorGeeks, I was a member at ars technica, but people over there are just too uptight and consumed with themselves to even consider giving a little help to a very fresh n00b. It seemed like all the "geeks" (read: assholes) there tried to reply only to the more obscure threads just so they could outdo each other. Truly pathetic.

Anyway, I found MG while searching for a forum that was catered toward computer geeks, but had a much more friendly atmosphere. After lurking for a few days to find out how people treated each other, it was kind of a no-brainer.

To be honest, I didn't know about the true objective of MG (e.g. helpful programs) until about two weeks after I joined. Now, anytime I need some abstract program for an equally abstract task, I'll more than likely start at MajorGeeks.com.

This place is great. To be even more honest, I have so much faith in this website that I would donate to it a little bit of money every month just to ensure it remains successful. As a college kid, though, I find that money is hard to come by.

I remember when you joined! ... Ummm... yeah. I remember! I understood what your name actually meant, eventaully. lol, considering I was supposed to be doing german (not any more! ha! still going to keep it going though... Germans a cool language) that wasn't very good

 

Heh heh...Oddly enough, I remember picking your posts out from the crowd while I was first lurking. I thought you were pretty funny.

When eclayton joined, I remember very clearly what he said in response to my name: "With a name like Gottheit, you're either German or very tall." He had me rolling for days with that one.

 

i joined after coming here to download something...or had a question about something...i don't remember which...

 

actually doing a search for arcade games....lol

i was on another board, but i didnt like the people so i never posted- then they changed the rules to play, and you had to post something like 3 times an hour play. thats easy enough here (some days...lol) but on a board where I had no interest adn didnt particularly like the people, it was near impossible. I did try, but couldnt do it consistently....so i got irritated and left.

Ironically enough- i post here more than i play games....lol

 

I've always been a bit funny, ever since I ran head first into a wall when I was 3.

Registered here when the site was in its infancy.

Came here when Pacers blew up.

In fact, I remember when Wenchie was called pc-wench, and twinny was called twinbs.... and.... I was called goldfish654. And then I asked someone whether I could get my name changed.... and I started a revolution

 

Ditto. There was a lot of name changing that went on all at the same time. It got kinda confusing.

 

Make that very confusing. All I wanted to do was get rid of the random number at the end of my name (because I thought there was already a goldfish here, for some reason )!

 

My pc was freezing big time and I had about 1000 messages in Yahoo to read, sooo....
I googled, I came, you helped, I came back again and was captured by the wit and wisdom of the residents. After that, there's no backing out!

 

I was in Tucumcary, and turned right instead of left. Ended up here.

 

Had a problem with a process called winser.exe

I had never tried forums before but I figured what the heck.

Heck I think he joined a month before I did and he had that little xmas little dude as an avatar.

That avatar was weird still is

Next thing I remember Dperino found out I was from Arizona and all hell broke loose. We started a arizona thread that included Six shooter and Adrynalyne

So far so good I have even met them guys with a memorable Geek Fest

A geek at another forum said there is a site called MajorGeeks with some wacko, really good, and I mean really good guys. Gave me the URL and the rest is history. So that's it 'word of mouth'.

 

A friend said I would like it, and he was right.

MG has been the most positive internet experience I have found.

Taking a digital photography course at the local university. They had two websites written on the board for help, MajorGeeks and Steve's Digicam.

 

I like it, lot of good information and reviews. I wish I had known about it before I bought my camera. Steve

i was a member of another board to annoy my ex, and 187 started some kind of dramam queen fight and wanted me to "stand up for his integrity"

well, i did, left, didnt think twice about it until I found it in my history when i was board one day and started fishing around. those were the glory days, in the beginning, with Twinny and abby and star and rex and goldy and a bunch of others that are now quiet...

Kodo bashing is still all the rage but everything else has changed...

I was working at the mall where they arranged a geekfest, I met the guys... Kodo and MA and CP showed up about half an hour late and I remember Tim telling me he's never late and now i wonder what he was smoking because he's ALWAYS late.. and well, I fell 'in love' with all of them and I've been here ever since.

I have my own little niche, I'm the one that will say whatever noone else has the balls to say. CP tells me to say things and then makes Abby delete them before anyone can yell at em

hmmm,

jim called me to create a character called "major geek"
the first version of him would make you all just laugh, think pencil neck, with glasses, skinny... in a military suit 2 sizes too big for him...

jim replied "can we make him a bit more buff?" ,and there you have it...

tim joined in after 3dfiles, they both tied me up stuffed me into a closet, feeding me nothing but new adobe apps, pencils, and inking pens..

i could say the rest is history... but MG's future is just so bright

Read an article about spyware in Utne Reader of all places, that mentioned Ad-Aware, googled, and picked this place cause I liked the name
