How do I close specific TCP ports in Windows XP home edition? Specifically ports 43594 and 43595?

To close a port, it's usually only necessary to shut down the program holding the port open. On some ports it's enough to tell the program or service that the port should not be opened. A good example is the Microsoft Internet Information Services in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. If installed, they open three ports automatically: 21, 25 and 80. Port 21 is the FTP server, port 25 the SMTP server (email server) and port 80 the webserver for http.

Here's how we find out what processes are keeping those ports open:

    1. Hit windows key + r (or click start --> run)
    2. Type 'cmd' (without the quotes)
    3. Press enter (or click 'ok')
    4. Type 'netstat -ano' (without the quotes)
    5. Press enter

This lists all ports, the IP addresses using them, and more importantly, the Process IDentifier (PID) that has them open. Find any listings of the ports you specified, and make a note of the PID. Now, follow these steps:

    1. Hit ctrl + shift + esc
    2. From the 'View' menu, select 'Select Columns'
    3. Check the box next to 'Process Identifier'
    4. Press 'ok'

Now, Task manager will show you all the processes running on your machine, and the PID of each. Find the ones you noted earlier, and stop them. This is typically all you need to do!

BTW - Great technical advice from Mada_Milty! :)

If that does not work for you, Sinjinn - This tiny NirSoft freeware utility might help you out…

CurrPorts - View Opened TCP/IP ports / connections

CurrPorts will display a list of all currently opened TCP/IP and UDP ports on your local computer and it works well with Windows XP [home or pro]. CurrPorts allows you to close unwanted TCP connections, kill the process that opened the ports, and save the TCP/UDP ports information to HTML file, XML file, or to tab-delimited text file. CurrPorts also automatically mark with pink color suspicious TCP/UDP ports owned by unidentified applications (Applications without version information and icons)

CurrPorts utility is a standalone executable, and it does not require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, simply copy the executable file (cports.exe) to any folder you like, and run it. You can select one or more items, and then close the selected connections, copy the ports information to the clipboard, or save it to HTML/XML/Text file.

NOTE for others who may be viewing this thread: This utility works well under Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. However, if you want to use this utility on Windows NT, you should install psapi. dll in your system32 directory. You can also use this utility on previous versions of Windows (Windows 98/ME), but in these earlier versions of Windows, the process information for each port won't be displayed.

    Good Luck!

Thanks Mada_Milty for the info but here is the problem. I know what program is using the ports, Runescape. I'm trying to keep my stepson off of it while he suppose to be doing homework. I have wireless network setup in my house and have tried to block it through my router but there are more links to it than I can find to block plus he is able to get on another unsecured wirless network in our neighborhood. So I need to block those ports on his computer so he can't get on regardless of which wireless network the computer is on.

    Thanks

Well sir, for your case, I would recommend a bi-directional firewall, such as Sygate Personal Firewall. With this app, you can block all traffic associated with Runescape, and set a password, so that you can unblock when necessary.

Thanks Mada. I'll look into the Sygate Firewall.
