How do I connect computer to wireless router

I recently bought a new PC that does not have a phone jack, nor wifi, only ethernet jack (not sure what they are called). I also bought a wireless router, and I need to setup a wireless connection. What I have is DSL, so the connection goes: phone jack (one that gets DSL) to DSL modem - DSL modem by ethernet cable to Wireless Router - Wireless Router by "phone line" to PC. Except I don't have the jack. Help! (any other suggestions than plugin wifi for PC, as that seems too slow)

Greetings, Mstonic, and welcome to Majoreeks.

If you've got to have a wireless connection then "plugin wifi" is going to be your simplest solution. The adapters are relatively inexpensive, deliver good speeds and are usually available at local stores such as Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.

We use this Belkin adapter - it's pretty much plug-n-play and provides a 300Mbps transfer rate.

We use similar adapters for notebooks because they are small and unobtrusive which makes them easier for the road warrior.

But for PCs, which tend to stay put and sit low on the floor, I prefer using a PCIe card with external antenna(s) like this Rosewill. For one, they don't rely on USB which is often problematic. Plus, external and adjustable antennas allow you to orient the antennas away from the metal case of the PC for best reception, and much greater range.

Yeah, adding a card takes a little more effort to install than a simple USB dongle, but installing a card is still a simple, and one-time process. Just unplug the computer from the wall, remove the case side panel (something you need to do periodically anyway to inspect for dust build-up), insert the card and secure it with a single screw, then replace the side panel, plug in the computer and power on. Windows should then detect the new device and help you set up your wireless access.

I used a wifi dongle with a USB extension cable on a desktop computer in the basement. The router is on the first floor and the extension cable on the dongle allowed me to position the dongle to get better wifi reception on the basement computer.

What a great idea! I would not have thought of that and I have several unused wifi dongles laying around (they often come with "Internet ready" TVs and BluRay players).
